Large food companies and supermarkets have
controlled our food for a long time. 3       But
customers are slowly beginning to ask important
questions about the food which they buy. When
they buy eggs or meat, for example, they think
about where the animals live and the food they eat.
Do they live comfortably? 4       How far do the
eggs, milk or meat travel from the farm to the
supermarket? How much are the farmers paid?
If you worry about things like this, you can help.

      Here are some ways to do this:
• Make sure that 30 per cent of your food comes
from your local area – in other words, not more
than 50 kilometres from your home.
• When you go into shops, supermarkets and cafés,
ask for food which is produced locally.
• Go shopping at your local market. 6      
Another way to help the environment is to grow
your own food. 7       If you haven’t got a garden,
you can grow tomatoes and herbs on your balcony.
And if you haven’t got a balcony, you can grow
herbs like basil near your kitchen window.
If you haven’t got a garden, why don’t you join a
food group? 8       If there is, you can plan a garden
together, work in it together in your free time, and
share the fruit and vegetables which you grow.

that day, Mount St Helens started to
erupt. There was a lot of ash in the

Mount St Helens is in Washington State. It isn’t
anywhere near Washington DC, the capital city of
the USA. Washington DC is in the east of the
country, but Washington State is in the north-west,
near Canada.
Washington has six big volcanoes, and some of
them are thousands of metres high. In 1980
scientists noticed that one volcano, Mount St
Helens, was growing bigger on one side. They
were worried because this was a sign that it was
becoming more active. They watched the volcano
for many days and told people in the area to be
careful. However, it was hundreds of miles from
Jeff and Rachel’s home, so they weren’t worried.
On 18th May, 1980 Jeff and Rachel went canoeing
on the Yakima River, near the town of Ellensburg.
They parked their car, and then they hiked to the
river, carrying their canoe. It was a sunny morning,
and they were enjoying their day.
After a while they noticed that the sky was getting
darker, and that a kind of sand was falling from the
sky. Finally, it became dark, and they felt very
scared. They got out of the river and went back to
their car, an old Volkswagon. Other cars were

on because it was so dark. Jeff and Rachel stopped
one of the cars and the driver told them that Mount
St Helens was erupting. They were less scared
when they heard this. They were a long way from
the mountain and they felt safe.
While Jeff and Rachel were driving home, grey ash
from the volcano was falling. Some cars didn’t get
out of the valley because the ash got into the
engines of their cars, but Jeff and Rachel’s old car
continued to go. Their clothes and hair were full of
ash, but they arrived home safely. Jeff kept some of
the ash in a glass jar, as a souvenir of a dramatic
day. They heard later that, sadly, sixty people died
because of the volcanic eruption.
