local backup file.

Objectives

After completing this lab exercise, you will be able to:

Create a local backup of your NETSCOUT AED system.

Restore the configuration of your NETSCOUT AED with a local backup file.

Estimated Completion Time

The estimated completion time for this lab is 30 minutes.

Lab Topology

Please ensure you read each step carefully before performing the required task in the order described.

If you are asked for your [POD] number in this lab, use the number that is part of your NE
username.

Example:  Username NE312 <=> [POD] = 312

AED Backup and Restore

The AED provides two types of system level backups:
Local: Backup file is stored locally on the AED and contains all configuration settings, including the
deployment mode, protection settings, deny lists, allow lists, current logo, and change log. It does not
contain traffic record data.
Remote: Backup file is stored on a remote sftp server, and in addition to the above includes
information about blocked traffic, including graph data.

Due to constraints within the overall lab environment you will create a local backup. After the backup is
complete you will delete the user account you created previously. To recover the deletions you will restore
your AED from the backup file and the deleted users should be restored.

1. Skip to Step 3 if a tab to the AED web UI is open. If not, then from your NETSCOUT Experience user
dashboard click on the AED link to open a new tab to the web UI.

2. If required enter your NETSCOUT Experience admin username and password.

Username: admin
Password: Welcome123!

3. In the AED web UI navigate to the menu item Administration > Backup and Restore
https://portal.ne.netscout.com/dashboard/lab_guide/441/45085/ 1/3

4. In the Schedule widget of the Configure Backup and Restore Settings page, click the Edit button.

5. For this exercise we’re going to schedule a Full Backup to execute daily, under the Full Backups setting
select Daily.

So that you do not wait too long for this backup to occur in the lab, specify a time of 5 to 10
minutes later than the current time of day. Enough time to complete the next five steps. Note: for
reference the current system time is displayed in the Arbor Smart Bar to the top right.

Leave Incremental Backups at Never (default).

6. Click Save

7. Go to the Server Settings widget, and click Edit.

Verify that Local (default) is selected. Notice however, that by selecting the Remote option, the
operator may specify the remote host server and directory information where the backup file will be
stored. Remember - the remote file server must support sftp.

8. Click Save

9. Now wait for a few minutes until the after the scheduled time of your backup passes.

10. After the scheduled time for your backup passes, view the Available Backups widget to verify that a
Full System Backup was created and stored locally as expected. You may need to refresh the page.

If the backup was successful you should see the backup listed under the Available Backups widget,
identified by the recent date/time, a description that it was a “Scheduled Backup”, that it was a “Full”
type, and “Excluded” traffic data. Enter any observations or notes that you would like to include here:

Solution

See the intro section of this lab guide that talked about local versus remote backups.

11. Next, go to Administration > User Accounts.

12. Delete at least one of the user accounts you created previously.

13. Return to the menu item Administration > Backup and Restore.

14. In the Available Backups widget, select the  Full backup  just created, if needed, verify the
date/timestamp to be sure of the correct one.

15. Select the Restore from Selected button.

Confirm by selecting the Restore button from the Restore system pop-up dialog box.

The UI will suddenly become unavailable with the message “Please Wait. Arbor Edge Defense is
currently unavailable. This page will refresh and retry momentarily.” The AED is loading the backup
configuration file.

Important. In the lab environment it will take several minutes, approximately 3-5 minutes, for the
system to reboot and to restore the configuration. In your browser window you will receive other
errors or warnings related to the lab’s VPN-less portal. You might be able to monitor the reboot and
restore progress if the serial console (CLI) browser tab is still available.

You may need to refresh your browsers web page to obtain the AED login.

16. Log back into your AED using your NETSCOUT Experience admin credentials.
Username: admin
Password: Welcome123!

17. Navigate back to Administration > Backup and Restore, the backup you created previously should
still be available to use.

18. Navigate to Administration > User Accounts, you should notice that the user account(s) you deleted
in a previous step are now restored. Add any observations or notes about restoring your AED here:
