SECTION A

DISCRETE MATHEMATICS

Answer BOTH questions.

1. (a) (i) Construct the truth table for p v q . [1 mark]

(ii) Copy and complete the truth table below for the compound proposition
(p ~ q) ~ (-p/\ q).

p q -p p => q -p 1\ q (p => q) ~ (-p/\ q)

[4 marks]

(iii) Hence, giving a reason for your answer, state whether

a) p v q and (p => q) ~ (-p 1\ q) are logically equivalent [2 marks]

b) (p ~ q) ~ (-pA q) is a tautology. [2 marks]

(b) Let x be the proposition 'I do Statistical Analysis' andy be the proposition 'I do Applied
Mathematics '.

(i) Express the proposition (x 1\ -y) as an English sentence. [2 marks]

(ii) Write the proposition 'I do Statistical Analysis so I will do Applied Mathematics',
using x, y and logical connectives. [2 marks]

(c) Use the laws of Boolean algebra to simplify (I 1\ m 1\ n) v (I 1\ m 1\ -n). [3 marks]

(d) Draw a switching circuit to represent the Boolean expression

[(a 1\ b) v (a 1\ c)] 1\ (a v b). [4 marks]

2. A carpenter has $1250 to spend on raw materials for the construction of x pine cabinets and y
mahogany cabinets that must be constructed within 30 days. The cost of raw materials, construction
time and profit associated with each type of cabinet are shown in the table below.

Cost($) of
Type of Cabinet raw materials Construction time Profit ($) per
per cabinet (days) per cabinet cabinet

Pine 100 3 300

M ahogany 250 5 550

The carpenter wishes to maximise the profit from the cabinets.

(a) State the objective function for this problem. [2 marks]

(b) Write down FOUR constraints, giving each inequality in its simplest form with integer
coefficients. [4 marks]

(c) Using a scale of 1 em : 1 unit on both axes, represent the inequalities on a graph and shade
in the feasible region. [7 marks]

(d) By considering the profit at the vertices of the feasible region , obtain the values of x and y
which will maximise the profit. [5 marks]

(e) Describe another method, involving a series of parallel lines drawn on the graph, that
could be used to obtain the answers in (d). [2 marks]

otherwise

(a) Show that k = 2~ 5 [3 marks]

(b) Hence find

( i) P(X~ 2) [3 ma rks]

(ii) E (X) and Var (X) [5 marks]

(c) (i) Determine the c umulative distribution function F of X wher e F(x) = P(X .: : ;. x)

4. (a) In a country a survey reveals that 5 % of adults are dissatisfied with their health insurance
coverage.

(i) Find the probabi lity that in a random sample of 15 adults who have the health
insurance coverage

a) exactly 2 are dissatisfied [3 marks]

b) more than 2 are dissatisfi ed [4 marks]

(ii) A random sample of 60 adults with health insurance coverage was taken. Justifyi ng
the approximation, use a suitable distribution to estimate the probability that at
most 3 are dissatisfied with the coverage. [5 marks]

(b) A and B are two events suc h that P(A) = 0.5 , P(B) = 0.6 and P(Au B) = 0.9.
(i) F ind by calculation P(AIB) [4 marks]
