TASK ONE – DIGITAL PORTFOLIO

STATEMENT of INTENT
My intention for this project is to design, innovate and build a multi-purpose hall stand.
For use as a general table as well as a standing table. Due to having renovated a room, I
wanted to create a functional and simple piece of xfurniture.

LIMITATIONS
COST, SIZE, FUNCTION, TIME, MATERIAL AVAILABILITY, EXPERTISE AND SAFETY.
The cost for this project should be minimal due to being provided with materials i.e., the
pine. Size is a large factor presenting a challenge for movement and storage, the overall
design should be no heavier than what I can easily lift. I have at least ten weeks to work
on this project which according to my time schedule should be more than enough.
Regular safety rules and regulations apply to this project as do the rest.

CONSTRUCTION PLANS
MATERIALS
4 x Timbers,
Pine was the easiest and cheapest option, something like cherry, oak or maple would
have provided a much better look however this is not going to be a staple piece of
furniture in my house.

Selection and justification of materials

4 x timber joints
Throughout this project, glue and biscuit joints have been used except for a mitred box
addition. I looked at joints such as dovetail, finger and butt joints, however, concluded
that biscuits were the easiest and quickest way to make my project look clean.

3 x adhesives, regular wood glue was the only option here although I did look at using
stronger glues such as gorilla glue, Elmer’s, jb weld and so on.

3 x components (hinges, handles, locks, glass, etc.),

The addition of the drawer counts as a component, whether I choose to put a locking
device in it could also count.

3 x Finishes
While researching lacquers Danish oil seemed promising however polyurethane and
linseed oil reoccurred due to the cost, look and ease of application.

RESEARCH
This is the main aesthetic I am trying to achieve, a
neutral finished piece integrating with the
surroundings .
Overall, an amazing build and what I am striving for in
quality and aesthetics.

See Below; was thinking about making a leather or

fabric rim and/or incorporating built-in draws for chips
and cards
