The Movement, Motion and Action Bundle is a sparkly answer to your curriculum needs for
teaching students how to draw and create the human body. Art lessons include divers,
dancers, runners, jumpers and more! There is even a multi-grade stop motion lesson where
students build their own 3D figure and create a simple stop motion video. Not only does
this Bundle include fabulous projects, but also made-for-you slide decks and two activities
that can be used as figure drawing warm-ups. These lessons and resources will make
teaching the human form a fun and energizing experience.

Adaptive

Lessons
We've taken a new direction with our Special Needs
Adaptations this month that we believe will better serve a
wider range of students and teachers.

In this new document, Rachelle has chosen four lessons

from the bundle to feature, with adaptation
recommendations for each. This month, the featured lessons
are Stamped Figures for Kindergarten, Body in Motion for
1st grade, Olympic Sports for 3rd grade and the
Jumping Self-Portrait for 4th grade. The document is
still located on the lesson page on the website.

Any templates indicated in the adaptations will be

located in the original lesson plan.

Richard Wills
Sparkler Since:
August 2020

Fun Fact: Richard Wills has

paid for his entire
membership so far using
funds raised via Artsonia!
How did you become an art teacher?
I became an art teacher through a roundabout way. As a kid, I wanted to be
an art teacher, but in college I stumbled upon graphic design, and since I am a big
techy it just clicked. I have my B.A. in Graphic Design and did work in the field for
several years. I enjoyed it, but something was missing. I had a chance to switch
careers, and I took the leap. Now, I have been teaching for 8 years, and LOVE IT!
Last May I graduated with my Masters of Education in Instructional Leadership. I
currently teach art and STEAM at a Pre-K to 5th grade elementary school,
and I am a Fine Art Chair for my urban school district.

What’s something that lights you up when you’re

teaching?
I love seeing that moment in my students’ eyes when they get
an idea about a project. Although my favorite part is when I
have a student who makes a mistake, or has a project go
sideways, and without a prompt, they develop their own
creative solution to the problem. That is a sign to me, that my
students are growing. Sometimes I tell people that I am not just
an art teacher, I teach creative problem solving.

What inspired you to join the Sparklers Club?

I have used several of the free DSS lessons for years and have bought some before the Sparkler
Club was launched. The last few years I have had friends who have raved about being a Sparkler, and when
COVID hit, I thought I should check it out. Having access to the DSS lessons have been a game changer for me,
especially when it came to juggling teaching both in-person and distance learning at the same time.

Do you have any words of encouragement for art teachers right now?
I have adopted the idea that not all our students will grow up to be artists. Some will be, others will not, but
they all can grow up to appreciate and be patrons of the arts. For me, that means I want to give my students the
best quality art education and creative experiences I can. That has been my guide in this crazy year. Are things
perfect, no, but right now, either in-person or distance learning, I am still trying. Still giving my students a
creative outlet, a chance to explore art, and how to be creative wherever they may be logging in from. Keep
being there, be those creative problem solvers, that teacher who lets them paint.
