CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Assessment is a key part of today’s educational system. Assessment serves as an

individual evaluation system, and as a way to compare performance across a spectrum and across

populations. The purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about student

performance or progress, or to determine student interests to make judgments about their

learning process. After receiving this information, teachers can reflect on each student’s level of

achievement, as well as on specific inclinations of the group, to customize their teaching plans.

Continuous assessment provides day-to-day feedback about the learning and teaching process.

Assessment can reinforce the efficacy of teaching and learning. It also encourages the

understanding of teaching as a formative process that evolves over time with feedback and input

from students (Matthew Lynch, 2016).

Math Alternative Assessment and Monitoring (MAALAM) is a System that improves the

Mathematical skills of the pupils of Basag Elementary School. The MAALAM system will

focused on the mastery of the multiplication facts.

A teacher was in-charge to take care the preliminary set-up to guide the pupils on the

Assessment and Monitoring procedures of the System. The pupil’s responses and basic

information’s will be recorded by the system using an electronic base data storage. Every Time

the pupil interacts with the system, he/she will input his/her LRN (Unique Learner Reference

Number) number as a primary key for his identity. The LRN number is the unique identifier for

each pupil.
IT 199 Y11 Undergraduate Thesis or Projects

There will be three levels of difficulty in the system. The teacher will choose the option

or the level of difficulty for the pupil. The system will give a random draw of multiplication

questions which will be answered by the pupil within 5 seconds. If the pupil could not answer

within 5 seconds it is considered incorrect already. This will be done during their remediation

sessions.

Reports will be generated from the system. It can be filtered weekly per section which includes

their names and scores in daily basis in tabular form. Data will then be analyzed, and will be the

basis for determining the pupils’ next level of difficulty.

Thus, the primary objective of this study is to add QR Code feature for MAALAM

system to give ease to students participating in the assessment and generate report every week to

monitor the student’s progress in their mathematical skills. This way, the teacher can have more

time to do other task.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Student’s interaction on MAALAM system consumes time and effort during assessment.

This study seeks to find solutions to the following identified specific problem.

 Basag elementary students inputs their LRN using a computer keyboard during

assessment which may cause the entire assessment process to run slow.

 QR Code feature for MAALAM System has not yet been tested.

1.3 Objectives

Add QR Code feature for MAALAM system to give ease to students participating in the

assessment. Thus, this study aimed to achieve the following objectives herein;
IT 199 Y11 Undergraduate Thesis or Projects

 Provide a scanner instead of computer keyboard for QR code detection feature of

MAALAM that automatically identify a student during assessment.

 Test the QR Code feature for MAALAM System.

1.4 Significance of the study

The main objective of this study is to introduce QR Code and create an MAALAM

device connection server. This strategy, however, creates random issues to support and track the

enhancement of the student's abilities. This research would have the following benefits:

Student - During the assessment, QR code detection will help them identify their LRN and also

avoid wasting time.

Teacher - The system allows them to easily assist and monitor the pupil’s improvement in their

mathematical skills.

1.5 Scope and limitation

This research covers the implementation using QR Code Detection for MAALAM

system of BES. This study covers only in detecting QR code from the Student’s ID and generates

report every week for a student’s progress in their mathematical skills of Basag Elementary

School (BES). The study focuses to improve MAALAM system for adding a new features called

QR code detection.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related studies which are relevant to the research that will be

conducted. Some of the methods presented will be utilized as the basis for the concept that will

be generated.

2.1 Theoretical Framework.

This section presents the theoretical framework of the study. This is intended to fully

understand what is to be done in the current study and be guided in the entire process.

Figure 2.1 - Theoretical Framework

As shown in the framework, the proposed system has two modules, which are students’

identity card with printing and Identity card authentication module. During registration, students’

credentials are collected and encrypted. The QR code image is then imported to Adobe

Photoshop environment and attached to the designed ID card before printing. During

authentication, the QR Code image is converted back to text image for matching. If the matching

is successful, the identity of the card carried is verified otherwise denied.

2.2 Automated Exam Process using QR Code Technology

Currently exam conduction is predominantly paper based. This paper provides idea about

generating QR code containing (MCQ) questions which can be viewed by students. The QR code

can be decoded by the students on their mobile handset, after which the questions can appear on

their mobile screen. After answering the questions in a stipulated time period, answers can be

sent to the server. The result is calculated on the server and displayed. This paper proposes a QR

Code based examination system to automate this process. This work proposes uses of two-

dimensional (2D) barcodes, which has the capability of storing data, to assist in reducing the

action of hardcopy for exams. A QR code is a type of matrix barcode designed for the

automotive industry. More recently, the system has become popular outside of the industry due

to its fast readability and comparatively large storage capacity. Cost of printing papers and their

transportation can be reduced. Malpractices can be put to an end.

2.3 Pre-service Teachers’ Perception of Quick Response (QR) Code integration in

Classroom Activities
IT 199 Y11 Undergraduate Thesis or Projects

Quick Response (QR) codes have been discussed in the literature as adding value to

teaching and learning. Despite their potential in education, more research is needed to inform

practice and advance knowledge in this field. This paper investigated the integration of the QR

code in classroom activities and the perceptions of the integration by pre-service teachers. Forty-

four pre-service teachers enrolled on an undergraduate degree at a higher education institution in

the United Arab Emirates took part in the study. Data were collected from a questionnaire,

student journals and focus group interviews to enable triangulation. The main results suggested

that the pre-service teachers perceived the use of QR codes to be easy and useful in learning

activities. They also demonstrated positive attitudes towards the QR codes and stated the

intention to use this application in their future career. The study provided practical examples of

how QR codes can be integrated in teaching. It also revealed certain challenges that could hinder

effective integration of QR code applications in the classroom. Recommendations for practice

and future research are discussed.

everyone The detection of QR codes, a type of 2D barcode, as described in the literature consists

merely in the determination of the boundaries of the symbol region in images obtained with the

specific intent of highlighting the symbol .In order to improve the practical application property

of the two-dimensional barcode Quick Response (QR) code, we investigate the coding and

decoding process of the QR code image. The barcode is a real mechanism for data reads. Data

can be stored, embedded and through the scanning device to show. The store of data which being

read. In this paper, we present a methodology for creating QR code approach for virtual word

examination process by using different techniques like SHA256, encoding, decoding, and Error

correction.

2.5 Smart Student Attendance System Using QR Code

QR Code has a wide range of applications in this evolving technology world. QR code

used to store massive information in a smaller space. So we decide to use QR code in our system

and proposed smart attendance system using QR code. Secure authentication, is achieved using

data-hiding algorithms with the embedded QR Code. In our project by using smartphones student

scan QR code which will have displayed by the teacher. When student scan this QR code,

automatically attendance will be marked according to the user id. It also discusses how the

system verifies student identity to eliminate false registrations.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

This chapter presented the entire process of acquiring raw images from the student of

Basag Elementary School using Deep Learning. The researchers would explain the whole

process in this section. The acquisition of data process is presented in order to obtain the desired

results.

3.1 Conceptual Framework

The figure below shows the flow that will be undergone to accomplish this research

study. The figure illustrates that the researchers would gather a data by capturing a photo of each

student of Basag Elementary School. After capturing the photo, the researcher should convert the

photo into grayscale. After converting, it would be going to the process of resizing the image to

adjust the dimension of the images into 266x266 pixels. After resizing, the images will be sorted

to the dataset then will be trained. After every training the researchers would record the accuracy

rate.

3.2 DETECTOR CLASSIFIERS IN FACE

Figure
A Computer program that 3.1 – whether

a picture is a positive picture (face picture) or

negative picture (non-face picture) is known as a classifier. A classifier is prepared on a huge

number of face and non-face pictures to figure out how to order another picture effectively.

OpenCV furnishes us with two pre-prepared and fit to be utilized for face identification

classifiers:

• Haar Classifier

These classifiers procedure pictures in dark scales, fundamentally on the grounds that we

needn't bother with shading data to choose if an image has a face or not (we'll talk progressively

about this later on). As these are pre-prepared in Open CV, their scholarly information

documents additionally come packaged with Open CV/information/. To run a classifier, we have

to stack the information documents first, as though it had no information, much the same as a

recently conceived infant (idiotic children). Each record begins with the name of the classifier it

has a place with.

3.2.1 HAAR CASCADES CLASSIFIER:

The Haar Classifier is an AI based methodology, a calculation made by Paul Viola and

Michael Jones; which are prepared from numerous positive pictures (with appearances) and

negatives pictures (without faces).

1. Haar Feature Selection: First step is to gather the Haar Features. A Haar include considers

neighboring rectangular districts at a particular area in an identification window, summarizes the

pixel powers in each area and figures the contrast between these aggregates.

2. Making Integral Images: Integral Images are utilized to make this procedure quick. A large

portion of the determined highlights are superfluous.

3. Adaboost Training: An idea called Adaboost which both chooses the best highlights and

prepares the classifiers is utilized. This calculation builds a solid classifier utilizing a straight

blend of weighted straightforward frail classifiers.
