Introduction

Fly ash has several advantages for the construction of embankments. The main advantages are
its low unt weight and high shear strength. The Pozzolanic hardening of fly ash imparts
additional strength and very little settlements, making it more suitable for use in
embankments.
Literature review 4
To determine the engineering properties of fly ash using various laboratory tests.
To check the stability analysis of fly ash embankment by using Geostudio software.
Methodology
8
Perform the laboratory tests to determine the Engineering properties of fly ash.
Determine the stability analysis of fly ash embankments by using Geostudio software.
9
Scope of the work 10
In developed urban areas natural borrow sources are scarce , expensive inaccessible. The
environmental degradation caused due to using topsoil for embankment construction is very high. Fly
ash can provide an economical and environmentally preferable alternative to natural borrow soil.
Many favourable properties for embankments construction are Light weight , higher shear strength
(greater stability), no lumps, usually moist, compacted under inclement weather, cost savings, etc.
● Even though fly ash can be compacted using either vibratory or static rollers , vibratory rollers 11
are recommended for achieving better compaction.
● The slopes of embankment should be protected by providing good earth cover using loamy
soil.
● The design of fly ash embankments is basically similar to design of soil embankments.

Conclusions
Fly ash can be proclaimed as one of the most advantageous waste material. Fly ash is an eco-friendly and
resource material in our construction industry. After several laboratory tests the properties are determined.
Since, the current usage of flyash in India is still around 25% and below 45% even in developed countries like
United States, there is a huge scope for flyash in upcoming years.
