Treaty of Peace between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Spain

(Treaty of Paris)

I have mixed emotions towards this treaty signed on the 10th day of December
1898 in Paris. As everyone knows already, the Philippines was colonized by the
Spanish empire, starting with the world voyage of Ferdinand Magellan. The Spanish
empire showed their authority to the Filipino natives, that were called Indios, indicating
their class as the lowest among all the occupants in the Philippine islands. The
oppressive power they displayed pushed the colonization for over 300 years. And after
333 long years, the Americans made their presence known and battled against the
Spanish empire. The Spanish empire representatives then signed a treaty with
American representatives and sold the Philippines for a price of $20 million. I am partly
grateful for what the Americans have done to release the Philippines and grant them
independence from Spain. However, the Americans still colonized the Philippines,
making the Philippines yet a dependent country. The Americans, despite occupying the
Philippines, helped make its first government and taught Filipinos many things. This
treaty started everything significant that happened in the Philippines. However, it is still
far from the true independence that was later achieved fully.
