National Grid 112345
National Grid 112345
Prior to 1990, the Central Electricity Generating Board was in charge of both the generation and
transmission activities in England and Wales (CEGB). The 1990s division of the CEGB into four
independent firms served as the foundation for the development of the current electricity market in the
United Kingdom. [4]
Three generation companies — PowerGen, National Power, and Nuclear Electric (later British Energy,
ultimately EDF Energy) — received its generation (or upstream) operations, and the National Grid
Company received its transmission (or downstream) operations.

The National Grid Company plc, which was owned by the twelve regional electricity companies (RECs)
through a holding company, National Grid, received the CEGB's transmission operations in 1990.
