1.0 Introduction
Integrated Design Project or IDP is conducted with aims to provide students with practical
experience in order to develop and expand their understanding of the nature of the civil engineering
design process, through a simulation of design activities of professional engineer in professional
consultancy environment. This course will help students to be able to design the building structures
and infrastructures for complex engineering based on relevant guidelines, organize a project in
team effectively as well as an individual, and propose a technical knowledge through project report
for problem solving in civil engineering works based on relevant guidelines. It will also help the
students to enhance their leadership skills and in handling project management and finance as well.
Other than that, students will be able to design and develop solutions to any problems encountered
along the way.
For the building structural design part, students are required to plan and design for a minimum 4
stories building. Throughout the designing process, students require to work in a group by establish
an imaginary consultant company. Besides, the designing work is conduct based on the
architectural drawing that students obtained.
For this project purpose, a consultancy company name as YSR Consulting Sdn Bhd is established.
The propose project conducted is a shop lots. This shop lots is located at 617 & 618, Lorong Abu
Siti, Section 16, Bandar Georgetown, D.T.L. Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. In the end of this report, a

1.2 Project Background
The title of this project is “Proposed Construction and Completion of 4 storey Shop at Lot
617 & 618, Lorong Abu Siti, Section 16, Bandar Georgetown, D.T.L. Pulau Pinang.”. This project
is expected to be complete at the end of 2023. The reason for choosing this location is because this
is a new developing area. So, it will be suitable for this project to be built in this area since the
project is a shop lot. It is the main attraction for the customer to shop at this lot area as it is located
at the city center of Pulau Pinang. George Town is a city center which is surrounded by the scenic
beauty of infrastructure that makes it more comfortable. This city is a strategic path with the
existing road network. Below is the table of project description:
This project was required to design a multi-functional storey that has total 4 storey. It is included
with shopping, veranda, lobby, pump space, and court yard on the ground floor with area 136 m2,
7.40 m2, 4.75 m2, 12.20 m2, and 10.15 m2 each and office space and A/C space on the first until
third floor with area 121.40 m2 and 2.40 m2. It will include toilets on every floor that separate for
female and male and also on the ground floor, there will be toilets for specialized needed (OKU).
The area of the toilets on the ground floor are 1.73 m2 for the female, 1.85 m2 for male and 3.80
m2 for OKU. On the first until third floor, both toilets for male and female are 2.90 m2. There will
be two sets of stairs from ground floor to third floor at both end of the building with dimension
2.430 m x 4.689 m at the back of the building, 2.315 m x 5.453 m on the front of the building.
However, on the ground floor, the stair dimension is 2.315 m x 3.453 m while one lift at the front
of the building, beside the main entrance of the building with dimension 2.340 m x 2.200 m.
The surrounding area of the proposed site is an existing business center as there were lots of shops
nearby. The project area is near to the main road and the project site is located in the high
population area. Based on the facilities available in the vicinity of our project, it can provide
facilities for residents in terms of social and living needs and easier for our group to build a new
project.
1.2.3 Project Scope
Structural engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering that helps to form the shapes and
structures of buildings, which includes several components such as beams, columns, slabs and
foundation. For this study, it is required to design and analyse a multi-storey (4-storey) building
that is allocated for development purposes, that is located in Lot 617 & 618, Lorong Abu Siti,
Section 16, Bandar Georgetown, D.T.L. Pulau Pinang. An illustration of the building should be
proposed, together with the plan from the elevation, side and plan view of the building. Depending
on the suitability and purposes of the design, the design parameters such as the building
specifications (eg: slabs and beams thickness and reinforcement), strength of materials (eg: fck
and fyk), exposure classes and nominal covers are set and assumed, before the loadings can be
analysis based on design considerations. The strength of the structure will be determined by
calculating and illustrating the shear and moment bending diagrams, to check if the structure is
able to serve its purposes without collapsing or failing. The calculations and design shall include
the following parts:-
i. Design of staircase.
Foundation
Slab
Beam
Staircase
Foundation
Column
CHAPTER 2
2.0 Introduction
This section mainly consists of building codes and standards related to the reinforced
concrete design and reinforcement that will be used in the project.
The building code is a specific standard that is specify for constructed structures, it is a
common language and requirements to design and construct a building or structure. It is
generally applied by architects, engineers, contractors and other related regulators. The
code of practice used for the design procedures is Eurocode (EC) which published by
European Committee for Standardization. Eurocode is a basis for construction and
engineering contract specifications. It also acts as a framework for creating harmonized
technical specifications for building products. Totally, it has ten sections of Eurocode
published as a separate European Standards. The codes and standards used in this project
will mostly be referred to BS 8110/ BSEN 1992 or generally known as the Eurocode 2
(EC2).
2.1.1 Eurocode 2
BS 8110/ BSEN 1992 or EC2 is generally used in designing concrete structures. EC2
complies with principles and requirements for the safety and serviceability of structures,
the basis of their design and verification that are given in EN 1990: Basis of structural
design. Eurocode2 is only concerned with the requirements for resistance, serviceability,
durability and fire resistance of concrete structures. Other requirements, e.g. concerning
thermal or sound insulation, are not considered.
Part 1-1 of Eurocode2 gives a general basis for the design of structures in plain, reinforced
and pre-stressed concrete made with normal and light weight aggregates together with
specific rules for buildings. The following subjects are dealt with in Part 1-1.
Section 1: General
Section 3: Materials
Apart from that, throughout the structure designing process, Eurocode 0 and Eurocode 1
also used as the guideline. Eurocode 0 also known as BSEN 1990 is use for basis of
structural design. Then, Eurocode 1 or BSEN 1991 is used for determine the actions act on
structures.
The initial sizing of members and specifications of the frame building are shown in Table
2.1. The initial sizes of member were checked against the conditions according to
serviceability limit state and ultimate limit state. The sizes were adjusted until the
conditions of serviceability limit state and ultimate limit state stated in EC2 were satisfied.
Table 2.2.1: Dimensions of structural elements
The critical structural elements were first identified in the drawing, after that manual
calculation were completed for evaluation of dimension for the structural elements.

The material used in the design of the structure in this research has different properties and
strength. Material properties applied in the design of the structural members are shown in
Table 2.2.

Loadings Specifications
Concrete Grade
Supersturcture 25 kN/m2
Substructure 35 kN/m2
As the location of building does not have much exposure to water, it can be assumed that the
corrosion may be induced by carbonation, with only a moderate amount humidity. Therefore,
according to EN 206-1, it is to be in the class of XC3 for exposure classes related to environmental
conditions.
The concrete cover is the distance between the mid-point of the reinforcement closest to the
nearest concrete surface and the nearest concrete surface. Nominal cover, Cnom is the sum of the
minimum cover, Cmin and the allowance in design for deviation, 𝛥cdev.
While 𝛥cdev is usually assumed to be 10, the minimum cover, Cmin, is taken from the highest value
of Cmin between the safe transmission of bond forces, factor of durability and fire resistance.
Table 2.4: Indicative design working life (Retrieved from Table NA1: MS EN 1990: 2010
National Annex)
The design life of this project is 50 years as it is classified to building structures and other common
structures category.
2.2.4.3 Fire resistance
According to Ninth Schedule in Uniform Building By-Laws 1984 (UUBL 1984), the shop lots
which consisted of more than one layer of storey, whicch total height of the building is less than
28m, their minmum fire resistance period for ground and upper storey is 1 hour. Since our
proposed building height is 13.05 m so the fire resistance period for our building is 1.5 hours,
which fulfil the requirement of 1 hour. The fire resistance class will be REI 90.
2.3 Software
Nowadays, the use of computer and software for the analysis and design of structures is a common
practice especially in designing office. This helps the exact design methods much easier to be
applied and the shorten design time. It also aids in reducing the possibility of making errors. As an
ease for the analysis, two kinds of software are used for the design which are AutoCAD 2010 and
ESTEEM 7.
2.3.2 ESTEEM 7
Esteem is a total integrated solution computer program that offers the complete package in
reinforced concrete design. Now with esteem, engineers can create and edit a model, perform
analysis, design, produce calculations and drawings through a graphic driven interface within
Microsoft Windows platform. Thus, in order to simplify and speed up lengthy calculations and
detailing processes, Esteem 7 has been chosen as the analyzing software for this proposed project.
CHAPTER 3
As the construction project is to be designed according to the designs prepared by the architect,
the design structure as suggested by the architect needs to be accurately visualized by the
engineer. After studying architect's plans, a design engineer can suggest necessary changes
from a structural point of view, such as additions or deletions and orientations of columns and
beams as required. The drawings should be examined to find out:
➢ The plans and location of doors and windows etc. are supplied to enable decide beam size
at these locations.
➢ Identify the dimensions of critical members and levels required in the plan to design the
lengths and sizes of different members.
➢ Identify the function and uses of the room space provided to determine the imposed load.
