Concept of Stress & Strain

Which is more elastic rubber or steel?

Solution:
F = Force Applied
L = Length of both steel and rubber
Er= Modulus of elasticity for rubber
Es= Modulus of elasticity for Steel
A = Cross-sectional Area for both steel and rubber
Δlr = Change in length of rubber
Δls = Change in length of Steel

Concept of Stress & Strain

Which is more elastic rubber or steel?

𝐹ൗ 𝐹ൗ
𝐸𝑟 = 𝐴 𝐸𝑠 = 𝐴
Solution: ∆𝑙𝑟ൗ ∆𝑙𝑠ൗ
𝐿 𝐿
Er= Stress / Strain As the cross-sectional area, load applied is same.
Es= Stress / Strain Hence, E ∝ 1/∆L
𝐸𝑟 ∆𝑙𝑠
=
𝐸𝑠 ∆𝑙𝑟
Es = 180 Gpa
Er = 0.5 Gpa

Concept of Stress & Strain

• Analysis of bar of varying section

Total deformation in material

dL= dL1 + dL2 + dL3
dL= (PL1 /A1E) + (PL2 /A2E) + (PL3 /A3E)
dL= (P/E)[(L1 /A1) + (L2 /A2) + (L3 /A3) ]

Concept of Stress & Strain

P = 35000 N
L1= 20cm d1 = 2 cm
L2= 25cm d2 = 3 cm
L3 = 22cm d3 = 5 cm

E = 2.1 x 105 N/mm2

Calculate
• Stress in each section (S1=111 N/mm2, S2 =49.5 N/mm2, S3 =17.8 N/mm2)
• The total extension in the bar ( 0.183 mm)
