Principal Stress & Principal Strain
• Principal Planes – Planes which have no shear stress are known as
principal planes
• Principal Stress – Normal Stress acting on the principal plane is called
principal Stress
Or
• Principal Stress – Maximum Normal Stress that can be found is called
principal Stress
• Principal Strain – The corresponding strain to the principal stress is
known as principal strain

Principal Stress & Principal Strain
What will happen
when shear
stress is zero?

Principal Stress & Principal Strain
• If material is brittle, then the design is done on the basis of maximum
normal stress
• If material is ductile then the design is done on the basis of maximum
Shear stress

Principal Stress & Principal Strain
• Normal Stress and Shear Stress acting on any plane, when the material
is subjected to bi-directional normal stress and shear stress.
