This document presents a summary of shear force and bending moment by Anand Shaw. It defines shear force and bending moment, lists different types of beams and loads, and explains the sign conventions for shear force and bending moment. The document contains diagrams to further illustrate these concepts.

Shear Force & Bending moment • Shear Force:- The algebraic sum of the vertical forces at any section of a beam to the right or left of any section is known as shear force. • Bending moment:- The algebraic sum of moments of all the forces acting to the right or left of the section is known as bending moment.

Shear Force & Bending moment • Sign Convention for SF (Shear Force)
• The SF at a section will be considered
positive when the resultant of the forces to the left to the section is upward, or to the right of the section is downward • Similarly, the shear force at a section will be considered negative when the resultant of the forces to the left to the section is downward, or to the right of the section is upward

Shear Force & Bending moment • Sign Convention for BM (Bending Moment)
• The BM at a section is considered positive
if the BM at the section is such that it tends to bend the beam to a curvature having concavity at top, the moment is also known as sagging moment • The BM at a section is considered negative if the BM at the section is such that it tends to bend the beam to a curvature having convexity at top, the moment is also known as hogging moment
