FEA using Displacement model
• Displacement method
{f} = [k] {d} for each element
Where, [k] = stiffness matrix
{d} = nodal displacement Fig. a:- Single spring element
{f} = nodal force

{F} = [K] {D} for global system

FEA using Displacement model
• Deriving the stiffness matrix for a spring element
Step 1: Select the element type
Step 2: Select a displacement function
Step 3: Define the relationship displacement, stress and strain
Step 4: Derive the element stiffness matrix and equation
Step 5: Assemble the element equation to obtain global equation and
introduce the Boundary condition (BC)
Step 6: Solve the nodal displacement

FEA using Displacement model
Step 2: Select a displacement function

Applying BC to the displacement

function Equation 01

Equation 02
Substituting Equation 01 & 02 in displacement function, we get

Equation 03

FEA using Displacement model
Step 2: Select a displacement function
Re-writing Equation 03 in matrix form

Here N1 and N2 represents the shape

function for node 1 and node 2
respectively

FEA using Displacement model
Step 3: Define the relationship displacement, stress and strain
Deformation the spring is represented as,
Equation 04

The force deformation relation for a spring has been shown below

FEA using Displacement model
Step 4: Derive the element stiffness matrix and equation
By the sign convention for nodal forces and
equilibrium, we obtain

Equation 06
Equation 07
Re-writing the equation 06 and equation 07 in the matrix form, we obtain

Where [k] is stiffness matrix

The matrix is square and
symmetric

FEA using Displacement model
Step 5: Assemble the element equation to obtain global equation and
introduce the Boundary condition (BC)
The global stiffness and global force matrix are assembled using nodal force equilibrium condition,
force, deformation and compatibility equation
Where ke and fe are element stiffness
and force matrix

Step 6: Solve the nodal displacement

The displacement are then determined by imposing BC, such as support condition, and solving a
system of equation simultaneously as
Equation 08
