load of 92KN at the central axis O of the section. Determine the
minimum dimensions of the coiumn to resist buckling for: (25 marks)
a) The upper end free.
b) the upper end pinned but restrained in the horizontal direction
by other structural members. What are the compressive stresses
in each case given that E = 200 GNm-2 (25 marks)

A steei rod 1m long and 30mm in diameter fits concentrical1y ilside a 1m


long copper tube having an internal diameter of 3.5mm and externaL
diameter of 60mm.

If the rod and the tube are rigidly fastened together at each ends and the
temperature increases by 250'C what will be the magnitude and nature
of the induced stresses in copper and steel respectively. If a compressive
load of 50kN is now applied on the heated compound bar calculate the
magnitude and nature of tfre resuitant stresses in the composite bar.

Determine the overall change in length of the bar.

150mm and overall depth of 200mm the thickness of the cross piece
(flenge) is 50mm and web = 25mm. At a certain section along the beam
