Ever since humans have lived on the earth, they have made use of various 32A forms of communication.
Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a
language barrier, communication is completed through sign language in which motions stand for letters,
words , and ideas .Tourists , and the local people unable to make themselves understood by each other
through speaking or writing have had to use this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words
are very likely and exact and can be used internationally, spelling, however, cannot compare with them.35
Body language sends ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A
wink can be a way of showing that the party is only joking. A nod means approval, while shaking the head
indicates a negative reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the
fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and
instruct people.

The family in the western world has changed greatly during the last two centuries. Social scientists
say that this change in the family is one of the important changes from a traditional society to a modern
society. Before the 19th century, families usually arranged marriages for their children. Young people did not
decide who they wanted to marry. After they got married, they usually had a lot of children. By the 19th
century, most young people could choose the person they wanted to marry. A marriage joined two people
and not two families. Two people could get married because they love each other, not just because their
family wanted them to marry. At the same time, parents began to realize that they had to take very good care
of their children. They had to take care of their health and try to give them an education. Before this, most
people did not go to school. Later people realized that education was necessary for a good life. Many parents
decided that they should have fewer children so that they could give each one a good life. More fathers
worked outside the home for money. Mother stayed at home and had greater control of the children and the
home than the father had. Family life is changing even faster in the United States today. Each year there is
almost one divorce for every two marriages. Many children grow up in a home with a mother but no father,
and the mothers generally have to work outside the home to take care of the family. Some social scientists
think that soon there will be no family life in the United States as we know it today. They do not know how
people will live. Others think that society needs families, and we will always have them.

Wedding is very important to the Vietnamese, not only to the couple involved, but also for both

In the past, both men and women were expected to be married at quite young ages.(29) Marriages were
generally arranged by parents and family, with their children having little chance to say no in the matter(29).
In the past it was not surprising to find that a bride and groom had only just met on the day of their
engagement or marriage.(30)
In modern Vietnam, this has changed completely as people choose their own marriage-partners based
on love, and in consideration primarily to their own needs and wants(31). Moreover early marriage is quite
illegal(31).
The traditional Vietnamese wedding is one of the most important of traditional Vietnamese occasions.
Regardless of westernization, many of the age-old customs practiced in a traditional Vietnamese wedding
continue to be celebrated by both Vietnamese in Vietnam and overseas(32A), often combining both western
and eastern elements. Besides the wedding ceremony, there is also an engagement ceremony which takes
place usually half a year or so before the wedding(32B). Due to the spiritual nature of the occasion, the date
and time of the marriage ceremony are decided in advance by a fortune teller.
The traditional Vietnamese wedding consists of an extensive array of ceremonies: the first is the
ceremony to ask permission to receive the bride, the second is the procession to receive the bride (along with
the ancestor ceremony at her house), the third is to bring the bride to the groom's house for another ancestor
ceremony and to welcome her into the family, then the last is a wedding banquet. The number of guests in
attendance at these banquets is huge, usually in the hundreds. Several special dishes are served. Guests are
expected to bring gifts, often money, which the groom and bride at one point in the banquet will go from
table to table collecting.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of
communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral
speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language
in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to
resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of the whole words are very
picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot. Body language
transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can
be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while
shaking the head indicates a negative reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be
found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and
smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct people. While
verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express
human thoughts and feelings.

In many modern countries, people think of a family as a mother, a father and their children. But this
is not the only kind of the family group. In some parts of the world, a family group has many other
members. This kind of large family is called an “extended family” or a “joint family”.
The joint family includes all living relatives on either the mother’s or the father’s side of the family.
It is made up of grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and cousins. They live together in a
large house or in huts built close together.
Early people probably lived in joint families. They had to be part of a large group in order to survive.
The members of the group helped each other hunt. They worked together to protect themselves from
dangerous animals and other enemies.
In China, people lived in joint families. When a son married, he and his wife lived at his parents’
home. Unmarried daughters remained at home until they married. Chinese children felt very loyal to their
parents. Younger members of the joint families always took care of the old ones.
In India and Africa, some people still live in joint families. The members of a joint family share their
earnings and property. If one member of the group becomes ill or has bad luck, the others help the person.
As in the past, the members of the joint family offer each other help and protection.

answer to each of the questions from 33 to 40:
Communication in general is process of sending and receiving messages that enables humans to share
knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Although we usually identify communication with speech, communication
is composed of two dimensions: verbal and non-verbal.
Non-verbal communication has been defined as communication without words. It includes apparent
behaviors such as facial expressions, eyes, touching, tone of voice, as well as less obvious messages such as
dress, posture and spatial distance between two or more people.
Activity or inactivity, words or silence all have message value: they influence others and these others,
in turn, respond to these communications and thus they are communicating.
Commonly, non-verbal communication is learned shortly after birth and practiced and refined
throughout a person's lifetime. Children first learn non-verbal expressions by watching and imitating, much
as they learn verbal skills.
Young children know far more than they can verbalize and are generally more adept at reading non-
verbal cues than adults are because of their limited verbal skills and their recent reliance on the non-verbal to
communicate. As children develop verbal skills, non-verbal channels of communication do not cease to exist
although they become entwined in the total communication process.
