4 THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND ACADEMIC

PERFORMANCE

According to (Rose, S., & Ramanan, S., 2017), sleep deprivation adversely affects the academic
performance and cognitive function. These findings can be explained by the fact that student who has
sleep deprivation will lead to poor academic performance alongside their cognitive function such as
the ability to pay attention and memorization. Moreover, students need to understand why sleep
deprivation can result in bad academic performance, why it is crucial to have a good quality of sleep
in order to achieve better academic performance. (Rose, S., & Ramanan, S., 2017)

Similarly, according to (AlFakhri, L., Sarraj, J., Kherallah, S., Kuhail, K., Obeidat, A., & Abu-Zaid,
A., 2015), the finding shows that students had correct conceptions about the negative impact of sleep
deprivation on academic performance and mood. Further, it is also crucial for students to learn more
information of sleep deprivation where the findings show students are overloaded with academic and
curriculum activities. (AlFakhri, L., Sarraj, J., Kherallah, S., Kuhail, K., Obeidat, A., & Abu-Zaid, A.,
2015). There information on how students actually feel about sleep deprivation and how it influences
the academic performance. (AlFakhri, L., Sarraj, J., Kherallah, S., Kuhail, K., Obeidat, A., & Abu-
Zaid, A., 2015)

According to the study by ( Ella, R. E., Lukpata, F. E., & Bassey, J. L., 2019), the result further
showed a statistically significant relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance. It
is found that there is an association between sleep deprivation and academic performance. To sum
up, students should receive appropriate guidance regarding the value of getting enough sleep for
academic achievement, but during class time and to a lesser extent during exams should they deprive
themselves of sleep. (Ella, R. E., Lukpata, F. E., & Bassey, J. L., 2019).

In (Amin, H. S., Almazroua, I. S., Alsahlan, A. S., Alrishan, M. A., Elmourad, H. M., Alotaibi, M. M., &
Almohaisin, A. I.,2016), the finding shows that sleep deprivation was negatively effect on students’
academic performance in medical students. The result in this research shows that studying was
indeed the main factor in sleep deprivation among medical graduates (Amin, H. S., Almazroua, I. S.,
Alsahlan, A. S., Alrishan, M. A., Elmourad, H. M., Alotaibi, M. M., & Almohaisin, A. I.,2016). Thus, the
academic performance of students was significantly impacted by sleep deprivation on weekend days
(Amin, H. S., Almazroua, I. S., Alsahlan, A. S., Alrishan, M. A., Elmourad, H. M., Alotaibi, M. M., &
Almohaisin, A. I.,2016).

Furthermore, a research made by (Seer-Uke, E. N., Dahiru, U., Ityodugh, J. I., Ikpato, V. T., & Agajah,
M. E., 2021), shown a significant positive effect on students’ academic performance while stress and
burnout both have negative effects on students’ academic performance. The results of this study
show that sleep deprivation is related to the academic performance. While, stress and burnout show
no relation to the academic performance of student.

While (Nava, B. S. M., Ragca, D. O., & Umali, K. D., 2019) found that sleep deprivation in terms of
average sleep debt and cognitive performance have significant effect on students’ academic
performance but not with mood assessment. Because of lack of sleep, students display indicators of
sleep deprivation in topics that need for greater attention and focus. This caused sleep deprivation to
mildly show as sleep loss, deficits in cognitive function, and mood assessments characterised by
difficulty focusing, confusion, and irritability. (Nava, B. S. M., Ragca, D. O., & Umali, K. D., 2019).
Therefore, there is an association between sleep deprivation and academic performance.
