I. Instruction: Research the following information. (Minimum of 10

sentences per item)

1. Basic Education Curriculum (BEC)

In general, the Basic Education Curriculum is an instructional
learning guide developed by the Philippine Department of
Education for use by teachers. This curriculum is designed to
contribute to the achievement of development goals while also
adhering to the national education agenda. In addition, the
curriculum strives to generate competent and literate students by
emphasizing the teaching of life skills in an open, student-centered
environment. The Basic Education Curriculum differs from the
earlier one in that it is more compact, specialized, and needs
greater student-teacher interaction. The disciplines in the new
curriculum have been condensed into fewer, more concise
subjects; instead of eight subjects in the past, the new curriculum
only requires five to be prioritized: English, Filipino, Math, Science,
and Makabayan. In addition, the teaching-learning process in the
Basic Education Curriculum expects the student to be a
participant in knowledge construction rather than only a
receptacle of ideas and knowledge. The curriculum plan, on the
other hand, makes no recommendations for the teacher's teaching
methods or activities. The Department of Education encourages
teachers and schools to come up with new and innovative ways to
apply the Basic Education Curriculum's concepts and criteria. The
use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the
learning process, which emphasizes modern technology and
information methods, equipment, and attitudes, is another
distinguishing element of the BEC. Overall, the Basic Education
Curriculum provides a compact, specialized, modern, and learner-
centered teaching guideline.

2. Secondary Education Development Program (SEDP)

In May of 1999, the Secondary Education Development Initiative

(SEDP) was introduced as an educational system program. The
Department of Education was in charge of the program's
execution, while the Bureau of Secondary Education was in charge
of its implementation. In general, the initiative was designed to
ensure that all Filipinos had access to high-quality education.
There are also more precise goals for the program. For example,
provinces' education should be improved. Another goal is to boost
secondary school student enrolment and completion. It was also
applied to improve the school administration capacities of division
authorities. The program, however, has been criticized and is seen
as the weakest link in the Philippine educational system. The
curriculum is overburdened with primarily unimportant subjects
that do not contribute to the pupils' overall growth. As a result, the
SEDP failed to place sufficient focus on students' mastery of key
abilities; it also provides limited opportunities for students to
assimilate necessary knowledge, as well as a lack of
interconnection across the disciplines given.

II. Answer the following questions. (Minimum of 5 sentences per

item)

1. On what bases would you choose a model for curriculum

development?
The Basic Education Curriculum offers a more current and
complete approach to teaching, making it a more relevant
curriculum development model. Most teaching and learning tools
in the present period can be accessed on the internet and are only
available through technology, making it all the more important to
be media and technologically literate. This will help both the
teacher and the student exchange knowledge more effectively.
Another reason is because the BEC is usually focused on a small
number of courses, making mastery of each subject easier and less
expensive because redundancies are rare. As a result, it makes
sense to employ a simpler technique to complete the required
educational output for both students and teachers.
2. Who should decide which model for curriculum development to
follow?
The Department of Education should have the authority to make
decisions about the Philippines' entire curriculum. This is due to a
variety of factors. The first one is that the Department of Education
(National Level) has more resources than the division level to
improve or adjust the curriculum model. Second, to avoid
incompetent tactics from being adopted in any sector of the
educational system, a standard and centralized instructional guide
should be developed. Finally, this would relieve the instructor of a
number of responsibilities, allowing him or her to focus on other
issues that require more attention.

3. Is the Tyler rationale a suitable basis for the current curriculum

development?
The Tyler linear model of curriculum development is, in fact, a
valid and productive approach for curriculum development. It has
different characteristics that stress the arrangement of what an
educator is expected to do in terms of imparting knowledge to
students. The aims, actions, structure, and evaluation components
of Tyler's logic all contribute to smooth sailing and more effective
educational methods. Because they are not difficult and
economically viable, many of these components are manageable for
educators to conduct in their real-time teaching practice. Overall,
the Tyler reasoning leaves a lot to be desired in terms of
curriculum development because it is well-organized, simple to
implement, and applicable to all educational institutions.
