ElectrostaticDischargeAwareness
All electronicequipmentis static-sensitive,
somecomponents morethanothers.
To protectthesecomponents fromstaticdamage,you musttakespecial
precautions to minimizeor eliminateelectrostatic
discharges.

Followtheseprecautions
whenworkingwithor nearthe control.

1. Beforedoingmaintenance on the electroniccontrol,dischargethe static


electricityon yourbodyto groundby touchingand holdinga groundedmetal
object(pipes,cabinets,equipment,etc.).

2. Avoidthe build-upof staticelectricityon yourbodyby notwearingclothing


madeof syntheticmaterials.Wearcottonor cotton-blend materialsas much
as possiblebecausethesedo not storestaticelectricchargesas muchas
synthetics.

3. Keepplastic,vinyl,and Styrofoammaterials(suchas plasticor Styrofoam


cups,cup holders,cigarettepackages,cellophanewrappers,vinylbooksor
folders,plasticbottles,and plasticashtrays)awayfromthe control,the
modules, andtheworkareaas muchas possible.

4. Do not removethe printedcircuitboard(PCB)fromthe controlcabinet


unlessabsolutelynecessary.lf you mustremovethe PCBfromthe control
cabinet,followtheseprecautions:

. Do nottouchany partofthe PCBexceptthe edges.

. Do nottouchthe electricalconductors.

. Whenreplacing a PCB,keepthe newPCBin the plasticantistatic

GeneralInformation

Description
The 2301ASpeedControlcontrolsthe speedor loadof dieselor gas engines,or
steamor gasturbines.Thesepowersourcesare referredto as "primemovers"
thismanual.

Speedrangeis set on an internaldip switch,availableinsidethe steelcoverof
the control-Speedsare set accordingto the sensoroutputfrequency.The
relationshipbetweenprime-mover speedand sensor-output frequencyis
expressedin the formula:SensorFrequencyin Hz equalsthe numberof teethon
the speed-sensing geartimestherevolutions perminuteof thesensinggear,
timesthe ratioofthe enginespeedto thesensinggearspeed,dividedby 60.

ReverseActing
Mostreverseacting23014SpeedControlswill operateWoodwardEGB
governor/actuators.In reverse-acting systems,the actuatorcallsfor morefuel
whenthe actuatorcunentdecreases.Completelossof signalto the actuatorwill
drivethe actuatorto full fuel.Thisallowsa backupmechanical ballheadgovemor
rather
to takecontrol thanshutdown the primemover as would a direct-acting
system.

Externalwiringconnections controlsare identicalto thosefor


for reverse-acting
controls.However,changesmustbe madeto the printedcircuit
direct-acting

Additionalinformationincludesunpackinginstructions,

Unpacking
Beforehandlingthe control,readpageii, "Electrostatic
DischargeAwareness".
Be carefulwhenunpackingthe electroniccontrol.Checkthe controlfor signsof
damagesuchas bentor dentedpanels,scratches,and looseor brokenparts.
Notifytheshipperof anydamage.

Selectionof SpeedRange
A 4-polemini-switch is locatedon the lowerleft-handquarterof the printedcircuit
board.Thisswitchsetsthe controllingspeedrangeas sensedby the MPU.The
speedsare relatedto the MPUfrequency,whichis proportional to enginerpm.
Thecontrolis shippedwith Switch3 on for 2000to 6000Hz. Switch1 provides
500 to 1500Hz,Switch2 provides1000to 3000Hz,and Switch4 provides4000
to 12 000 Hz. Selectonlyone switchon to matchthe controlto the MPU
frequency.

PowerRequirements
Powersupplyoutputmustbe low impedance(forexample,directlyfrom
batteries).DO NOTpowerlow-voltage versionsof the controlfromhigh-voltage
sourceswith resistorsand zenerdiodesin serieswiththe controlpowerinput.
The 2301Acontrolcontainsa switchingpowersupplywhichrequiresa current
surgeto startproperly.

CAUTION-CHECKINPUTVOLTAGE
To preventdamageto the control, do not power low-voltageversions of the

Highand low voltagemodelsof 2301ASpeedControlsare available.Low


voltagemodelsrequirea supplyof 10to 40 Vdc,12W. Highvoltagemodels
requirea supplyof 88 to 120Vacor 90 to 150Vdc.,12W. Theac supplymaybe
50 to 400 Hz.

lf a batteryis usedfor operatingpower,an alternatoror otherbatterycharging


deviceis necessaryto maintaina stablesupplyvoltage.

CAUTION_BATTERY
To preventdamageto the control, makesure that the alternatoror other
battery-chargingdevice is not connectedto the control when the batteryis

ShieldedWiring
All shieldedcablemustbe twistedconductorpairs.Do not attemptto tin the
braidedshield.All signallinesshouldbe shieldedto preventpickingup slray
signalsfromadiacent equipment. Connectthe shieldsto thegrounding lugon the
chassisplatebelowTerminal 9. Keepgrounding conneclions under2 inches(5
cm)length.A solidgroundconnection mustbe madefrom"earth'orgroundto
the groundinglug to provideproperchassisgrounding.Referto localwiring
codesfor propergrounding methods.

Wireexposedbeyondthe shieldshouldbe as shortas possible,not exceeding6


inches.The otherend of the shieldsmustbe left openand insulatedfromany
otherconductor.Do not runshieldedsignalwireswithotherwirescarryinglarge
currents.SeeWoodwardapplicationnote50532,EMI Controlfor Electronic
GoverningSystems, for moreinformation.

Whereshieldedcableis required,cut the cableto the desiredlengthand prepare


the cabfeas instructedbelowand shownin Figure2-2.

Switch Options
MinimumFuelContact
The minimum-fuel contactbetweenterminals2 and 3 on the low-oowermodels
and3 and6 on the high-power modelsis intended as an optionalmeansfor a
normalshutdownofthe primemover.The contactis connectedas shownon the
plantwiringdiagramfor the particularcontrol.lf a minimumfuel contactis not
used,theterminals mustbe permanently jumpered.

Do NOTuse the minimum-fuelcontact as a part of any emergencystop
-\, sequence.The emergencymay be causedby a governormalfunctionwhich
would also causea malfunctionof the minimum-fuelfeature.Use of the
minimum-fuelcontact for an emergencystop sequencecould cause
overspeedof the prime mover and mechanicaldamageand personalinjury,
death.

FailedSpeedSignalOverride
Circuitsin the2301ASpeedConlrolconstantly monitorthesignalfromthe MPU.
Shouldthissignalbe belowa minimum threshold thecontrolsendsa minimum
fuel signalto the aciuator(maximumfuel signalon a reverseactingcontrol).

Beforestart-upofihe primemover,the speedsignalis nonexistent, activatingthe
failedspeedsignalcircuil.On unitswithcrankingmotors,the crankingspeedis
usuallysufficientto providea speedsignal,so an overridecontactis not needed
for starting.On somesteamturbinesystems,the Closefor Ovenideof Failed
SpeedSignalcontactmustbe closedto allowthe actuatorto oDenand Drovide
steamfor starting.

The failedspeed-signal
overrideswitchshouldbe a momentaryswitchso the
failed-speed-sensor
circuitwill be enabledafterstart-up.

ldle/RatedRampContact
Connecta single-pole, singlethrowswitchto terminal5 as shownon the
appropriate plant-wiring
diagram.Closethe contactfor rated,openfor idle.Oil
pressureis oftenusedto closethis contact.Whenclosed,10 to 40 Vdc is aoolied
to terminal5, andihe primemovercan be operatedat a speedhigherthan id.le.
Whenthe contactis open,the voltageis removedfromterminal5, and the prime
mover'sspeeddecelerates to idle.The ramprateappliesonlyto the acceleration
mode.Whenthe ramptime potentiometer is full cw the ramptimefrom idleto
'atedis 22 t4 seconds.Whenthe ramptime potentiometer is fullyccw (be
careful not to overtorquethe potl, the ramprateis lessthan 1 secondfrom
idleto rated.

The ramptimefromratedto idleis alwayslessthan 1 second,regardlessof the


settingof the ramp-timepotentiometer.

ActuatorOutput
The actuatorwiresconnectto terminalsI (+) and 10 (-). Useshieldedwireswith
the shieldconnectedto the groundedposton the panel.Do not connectthe
shieldto the actuatoror to any otherpoint.The shieldmusthavecontinuitythe
entiredistanceto lhe actuatorand mustbe insulatedfromall otherconductors.

actuatorsin seriesas shownin detailA of the wiringdiagram.Tandemoperation
witha single2301Acontrolrequiresthat the two enginesprovideidenticalpower
responseto identicalcurrentsignalsto eachof the actuators.

NOTE
ElectromagneiicInterference(EMl)can be an intermittentcondition.
lmproperlyshieldedinstallationscan providegood controlfor a while and
then causeproblems.For this reasonit is importantto be sureall shields

ExternalSpeedTrim
A jumpermustbe connected between terminals 11 and12 unlessan oDtional
remoteSpeedTrimpotentiometer is used.lf a SpeedTrim potentiometer is used,
connectit as shownin theplantwiringdiagram, usingshieldedwire.A 100O
multiturnpotentiometerwill provide15%speedadiustmbnt. potentiometers of
smallervaluesmaybe usedif lessadjustment is desired.

Speedand PhaseMatchingwith an SPM-ASynchronizer
ConnecttheSPM-A(optional equipment)wiresto terminals 15 (+/-) and 16
(com).Useshieldedwireand connectthe shieldto the ground.

AuxiliaryInput
Terminals'17(-) and 15 (+) are usedfor auxiliaryinputfroma loadsensor.Use
of the loadsensorand oarallellinesallowthe 2301ASoeedControlto be usedin
isochronous load-sharingcircuits.lfthe loadsensoris not used,droopmustbe
usedto shareload.(Anexception engineinstallation
is a multiple in whichone
engineis operated isochronously andall otherenginesareoperated in droop.)

SpeedSensor
Connecta speed-sensing device(a magneticpickup(MPU)is normallyused)to
terminals8 and7. No polarityis observed.Useshieldedwireandconnecttheshield
onlyal the2301Acontrol.Theshieldmusthavemntinuitytheentiredistanceto the
MPU.Theshieldis to be insulated fromall othermnductorsandfiom the MPU.

terminallugsare carefullyand correctlyinstalled.(lnconectlyinstalled

clearancebetweenthe gearand the sensor,and adiustif necessary.

2. Checkfor Grounds.
Withthe poweroff, checkfor groundsby measuringthe resistancebetween
eachterminal andthegrounding boltlocatedbelowterminal9. Terminals 1
and2 arc power-input terminals.
Eitherof theseterminals maybe grounded
in accordance withlocalcodesor throughotherequipmentpoweredfrom
thesamesupply.lf eitheris grounded, a highresistanceto groundwillbe
evidentat terminals1 through5 on lowvoltagemodelsandterminals 1
through4 on highvoltagemodels.groundspresenton theseterminals will
not normallyaffectoperation,unlessthey interferewiththe inputpoweror
switchinglogic.Groundson terminals 7 through17,detectedby readings
otherthaninfinitv.

sensorconnectedto the control.Beforecranking,be sureto preventthe
primemoverfromstarting.At 5% of the lowervalueof the control'sspeed

Increasingthe seftingof the GAINpotentiometer providesfastertransient


response(decreasesthe magnitudeof the speedchangefroma suddenchange
in load).To achieveoptimumresponse, slowlyincrease theGAIN(turnthe
potentiometer clockwise)untilthe actuatorbecomesslightlyunstable,thenslowly
turnthe GAINbackcounterclockwise as necessaryto stabilizethe actuator.Step
loadthe generator, or bump the terminalshaft,to makesurethatthe
actuator

Start-fuellimit is nol recommendedfor use with reverse-actingcontrols.
With loss of speedsignal,the reverseacting control will position the
actuatorat the start-fuellevel if the failed-speed-signaloverride is activated.
Reverse-actingsystems normallyrequirethe control to demandfull fuel on

The 2301ASpeedControlmonitorsprime-mover speedand maintainsit at the

Thefollowingtroubleshooting guideis an aid in isolatingtroubleto the control
box,actuator,plantwiring,or elsewhere.The guideassumesthatthe system

indicated.

NOTE
The wrong voltage can damagethe control. When replacinga control, check
the power supply, battery,etc., for the correct voltageas indicatedon the
