UNDERSTANDING THE Z-SCORE

x−μ
FORMULA : z=
σ

Example 1 :
Given a random variable X having a normal distribution with μ =50 and standard
deviation of 10. Find the z- value that corresponds to x=42.
SOLUTION : μ = 50 σ = 10 x = 42
42−50 −8
z=
10
=
10
=−0.8 z = -0.8
z = 0.2881
z = 28.81%

Example 2 :
Given the mean of 38, and standard deviation of 6. Find the z-value of a score
x=50
SOLUTION : μ = 38 σ=6 x = 50
50−38 12
z=
6
= =2
6
z=2
Example 2 :
Given the mean of 9, and the standard deviation of 12. Find the z-value of a
score x=45

SOLUTION : μ=9 σ = 12 x = 45
45−9 36
z=
12
= =3
12
z=3
