IT’S NOT THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA (ITALY)

Diatoms - microalgae - the most common types of phytoplankton

Diatoms are responsible for 20% of global carbon fixation and 40% of marine
primary productivity.
major contributors to climate change processes, forms a substantial basis of
the marine food web.

GECKOS - GECKO GLUE/ADHESIVE TAPES

geckos’ gravity defying grip: rows of tiny

hairs, called setae, on its toes.

hairs cling to any surface using the sticky

van der Waals forces

GECKO ROBOT - LEMUR

A future robot called LEMUR (Limbed Excursion Mechanical

Utility Robot), with very gecko-like feet could inspect and
maintain installations on the International Space Station.

MORPHO BUTTERFLY - TEMP/CHEMICAL SENSORS

Dimethyl methylphosphonate, a nerve agent simulant, and dichloropentane, a

mustard gas simulant, were successfully detected at the parts per million
level by processing visible light reflected from the natural photonic crystals
inherent to the wing scales of the Morpho didius butterfly.

LOTUS – SELF CLEANING COATINGS

Lotus leaves have a fine surface with wax crystals of around 1 nm in diameter. The
contact area between the water and surface is reduced to only 2-3% of the droplet-
covered surface.
Nanotechnology is being used to mimic the lotus leaf surface and create new no-stick
painting or coating.

PLANT BURRS

Swiss electrical engineer, George de Mestral went for hunting in the

Alps (1941)
10 years later, after countless experiments with hooks and loops of
various materials, Mestral obtained a patent for a new fabric fastener

KING FISHER BEAK - BULLET TRAIN

In 1990s, Japanese engineer Eiji Nakatsu noticed that kingfisher birds

could dive into the water with barely a splash
Shinkansen bullet train, based on the kingfisher beak, not only reduces
the noise of the train but was also more aerodynamic, using less power
and enabling higher speeds.

TERMITE MOUND – NATURAL AC

Termites mounds - has a passive cooling system using a series of vents .

Wind blows hot air from underground chambers through the vents and out of
the structure
Architect Mick Pearce (Zimbabwe) - building which stays cool without air
conditioning and so uses only a 10th of the energy of a conventional building of
the same size.
