THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Travelbee's Theory: Human-to-Human Relationship Model

Researchers used the Human-to-Human Relationship Model by Joyce Travelbee to better understand
the concepts in relation to Peer-to-Peer mentoring in the University of the Cordilleras.

The nurse and the patient are both human beings who interact with one another through
communication. Nursing is an interpersonal connection in which the nurse assists a patient, a family, or
a community in preventing or coping with an illness or suffering in ways that may lead to finding
meaning in the experience. The nurse is responsible for educating the patient and providing strategies to
help the patient avoid or alleviate the distress caused by unmet needs (Pokorny, 2010; Travelbee, 1971).

In the context of Peer-to-Peer Mentoring, the mentor must approach the person or mentee with
empathy from the initial meeting. He/she should build a rapport with the person to gain confidence, and
trust. The mentor should help a less experienced person achieve their goals by assisting and guiding the
person in their problems through communication.

Variables:

Independent: Peer-to-Peer Mentoring

In the context of nursing students, peer mentoring can be defined as a process whereby an
experienced student nurse provides support and guidance to another student nurse with academic/
personal difficulties.

Dependent: Learning Strategies

A learning strategy is an individual's way of organizing and using a particular set of skills in order to
learn content or accomplish other tasks more effectively and efficiently in school as well as in non-
academic settings (Schumaker & Deshler, 1992).
