QRI Passages

Primer Passage A Night in the City:

I began with a narrative Primer level passage. He scored a 0/9 on the concept questions I

asked before he read the passage to score his familiarity. As for reading accuracy, he had a total

of 10 miscues. When answering the comprehension questions, he did well overall and scored at a

low instructional level. I did need to prompt him with most of the questions reminding him to

think in the context of the story he just read. This is the reason my next passage was an

expository text at the Pre-Primer 2 level.

Pre-Primer 2 People at Work:

The student did well with the concept questions before reading the text scoring a 9/9 in

familiarity. He only exhibited 4 total miscues and read with impressive pacing. His high

familiarity score combined with his proficient accuracy and rate gave me high hopes for the

comprehension questions, but the student struggled heavily with this portion. He could not

answer any of the questions correctly without prompting or looking back. I had to rephrase the

questions multiple times for him to understand what was being asked. For this reason, he scored

at a frustration level. Even though he could read the passage very well, he could not provide

adequate answers to the comprehension questions. I moved to a narrative text at the Pre-Primer 2

level.

Pre-Primer 2 Just Like Mom:

The student scored a 0/9 for the concept questions. I would not say this means he is

unfamiliar with the concept of the story; I think he just did not understand the questions and led

me to believe he may have an issue processing language. Regardless, he exhibited zero miscues

and did slightly better on the comprehension questions than he did on the Pre-Primer 2
expository text. He did need require prompting and lookbacks on most of them to answer

accurately and earned a 3/6 which puts him at a frustration level.

Summary:
Based on this data, the student needs to begin instruction at a Primer level since that is

where he can answer most of the comprehension questions with little to no prompting. The two

goals I have for him is to work on his decoding skills and subject verb agreement. I would also

like to work on comprehension skills, but I think the reason he is struggling to comprehend is

because he cannot decode words, so he does not know what they mean. He also does not

understand the concept of the subject of the sentence or passage or the verb that tells the subject

what to do. If he is able to understand these two concepts, it will improve his comprehension

skills significantly.
