Assignment (Descriptive Measures)
Assignment (Descriptive Measures)
1. The grade-point averages of 20 colleges seniors selected at random from the graduating class
are as follows:
3.2 1.9 2.7 2.4
2.8 2.9 3.8 3.0
2.5 3.3 1.8 2.5
3.7 2.8 2.0 3.2
2.3 2.1 2.5 1.9
2. Calculate the mean, median, mode and skewness for each of these distributions:
Distribution A 2 3 4 4 4 5 6
Distribution B 2 3 4 4 4 5 20
Distribution C −5 −4 −3 0 3 4 5
Which measure of central tendency would be “best” or most useful measure for each
group? Briefly justify your choice.
3. If a final examination in a course is weighted 3 times as much as a quiz, find the mean grade
if a student has a final exam grade of 85 and quiz grades of 70 and 90.
4. Four groups of students consisting of 10, 15, 8 and 17 reported a mean height of 1.52, 1.36,
1.74 and 1.28 meters, respectively. Find the mean height of all the students.
5. A random sample of 10 students was given a special test. The time in minutes it took the
students to finish the exam were taken and are given as follows:
15 30 26 40 35 19 22 28 17 38
a.) Show that the mean and the median values are equal.
b.) Find the mode of the data.
c.) Find the values of the standard deviation, coefficient of variation, D7 and P35.
III. Presentation and Descriptive Measures for Grouped Data
1. The data given in the table represent the number of babies born in 1999 in 30 selected hospitals
in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte.
30 55 27 45 56 48
37 55 52 34 54 42
32 26 40 28 53 54
39 56 59 58 49 53
52 57 43 46 54 31
Do the following:
a.) Construct a frequency distribution of these data.
b.) Construct its frequency histogram and frequency ogive.
c.) Find the mean, mode, standard deviation, D5 and Q1 .
Consider the cumulative frequency polygon (or frequency ogive) as shown below.
