Buzz, Lin and I wrote about Tranle
Granlie, a former Vietnam refugee
who left “Nam and went to Germany.
It took her 10 years to become
an American citizen, a LEGAL
American citizen!
As we reported in the article,
November 20 was the two-year
anniversary for this well educated
nurse, who speaks four languages I
might add, to enjoy her citizenship.
Well, we have an update of this
“not really a fairy tale yellow brick
road journey,: Wednesday the 14th,
of December, American Legion
Legionnaire, Daniel Nardinger, of
Carbon Post 17, went above and
beyond the call to recognize her long
trek to becoming an American.
We tried to get her Citizenship
recognition with an American Flag.
Daniel wrote me and asked for her
particulars on contacting her. Well,
we got the information to Dan and
then he emailed me saying that he
attempted several times to get in
contact with Tranle.

OBITUARY
Candy France
Candy France, age
76, of Glasgow, Montana
passed away December 12,
2022 at FMDH after a battle
with Endometrial Cancer.
She was strong and brave to
the very end.
Candy was born to
Ralph and Gladys (Jensen)
Krause on May 20, 1946, in Great Falls, Montana. She
graduated from Helena High School in 1964. She worked
for Mont Bell and recalled fondly how everyone used to
dress up for work wearing dresses, stockings and heels. She
carried that on throughout her life, always looking classy
when she was going to work.
Candy married J.D. “Bud” France in March 1972. They
welcomed a daughter, Angela, in December 1976. She was to
be their only child together. They had a very interesting life,
moving many times between Colorado, Texas and Montana.
When they moved to Glasgow in 1993 to be near her uncle,
Melvin Jensen of Hinsdale, Candy and Angela both said
“NO MORE MOVING!” Glasgow became their home, and
Candy established Herbs & Things in 1995 which is still in
operation to this day. She loved her store, customers, and
especially loved talking and debating politics- she really got
animated during some of these discussions!
Bud passed away suddenly in 1998, and not too long
after that she took on the project of rescuing cats. She loved
cats. She spent a lot of time and money getting cats spayed/
neutered and rehomed. Her dedication to this cause has
prevented hundreds, maybe thousands of unwanted kittens
here in Valley County. This was her passion in life, and she
will be forever remembered for it.
She married Robert Dunseth on January 19, 2002. He
became her best friend and they had so much fun together.
He adored her and helped her with her many “projects”. They
had 13 wonderful years together until his death in June 2015.
Preceding her in death were her parents, aunts and
uncle, her husband Bud France and her husband Robert
Dunseth.
She is survived by her daughter Angela France of
Glasgow; her step-son, Tom France of Billings; step-
daughter, Jen Brodal of Minot; her very special cat, “Chance”,
and numerous cousins.
A Celebration of Her Life will be held 11:00 a.m.,
Monday, December 19, 2022 at Bell Mortuary with Pastor
Tom Fauth officiating. Burial will be when the weather in
nicer in the spring. Condolences may be left for the family
at bellmortuarymontana.com. In lieu of flowers, donations
can be made in her honor to Wolf Point Pound Puppies, PO

It’s interesting to look back in history to see who played
boys basketball back in 1943. Back then Glasgow was called the
Highlanders and Bob Murray was the coach and he had an 18-
game schedule.
Reporting for practice were Frank Helland, Bob Williams,
Bert Mann, Rolland Hammerness, Jim Farrell, Joe Luckman,
George Cole, Don Phay, Don Peterson, Warren Waters,
Richard Larson, Dave Bundy, Walter Russell, Don Thill, and
Bill Sternhnagen.
Glasgow had games with Plentywood, Scobey, Malta,
Glendive Havre, Miles City. Wolf Point, Great Falls and Sidney.
Glasgow was a member of the Big 16, which disbanded after
the season and went into two Class A conferences. Glasgow
played its games at the Civic Center.
Glasgow lost its first contest, 19-15 to Plentywood and
43-9 to Scobey.
Glasgow was seeded fourth in the Eastern Class A
Division, the Highlanders defeated Glendive 32-25 for third
place. Glasgow lost to Miles City 41-19 and lost to Sidney 48-
33.
Bundy had 12 points in the loss to Miles City, Rask led the
Cowboys with 20. Farrell had 10 against Sidney, while Mielke
led the Eagles with 13. Bundy also led Glasgow in the win over
Glendive with 12 points. Zander had nine for the Red Devils.
George Moore was the coach for the Hinsdale Raiders
and Loren J. O’Connor for Nashua. The Porcupines played
Poplar, Malta, Frazer, Wolf Point, Hinsdale, Saco and Opheim.
These teams were in Class B.
Hinsdale defeated Nashua 38-30 in the first game of the
season and Opheim edged Peerless 27-23.
The District 3 Class B tournament was played at the Glasgow
Civic Center Feb. 24-26. Wolf Point was the number one team
Saco, Malta, Hinsdale, Nashua, Frazer and Opheim followed.
The referees for the 10-game tourney were Dean N. Turner of
Sidney and Leslie O. Soine of Williston.
Wolf Point won the title with a 37-27 win over Malta.
Casey led the Pointers switch 13 points while Trottier had 11 for
Malta. Saco beat Hinsdale 42-33 for third with Allen Johnson
scoring 14 for the Panthers and Bob Burns 15 for the Raiders.

the main event was scheduled. Easy,
peezy. What could go wrong? Right?
As we waited to hear from
Dan and see the photo of the
presentation, the time went slowly
by, but there still was no word.
So I wrote Dan and he wrote
back to me explaining that in the
attempt to drive to Billings to
present to her the American Flag, the
adverse weather hit down in Joliet,
MT, so the trip was postponed.
When Legionnaire Nardinger
finally got a break in the weather, he
took off in his car heading to Billings
and as fate would have it, he struck
a deer on the highway that almost
totaled his car. Fortunately he was
uninjured!
With that stumbling block,
Daniel did not stop trying. But then
Vietnam Veteran and persistent as
all get out!
So he got another vehicle,
but then he and his wife had to
postpone the flag presentation, due
to a graduation over in Butte, MT, so
off they went.
It seemed as if this presentation
just was not meant to be. Road block
after road block. Then he finally got
a break in both the weather and
set backs, and off he went again. I
was once told that adversity builds
character, and if that is true, Dan
Nardinger is loaded with character!
Well, he finally made it to the
Billings Clinic but he did not realize
how many parts of the Clinic there
were, now. So he tried them all
and finally found the area he was
supposed to get to meet Tranle.
Dan got in the elevator, the
doors closed and then he found out
that there was no 4th floor button…
that’s where he had to go. He finally
met another nurse who noticed that
Dan was having some direction
problems and took him to a special
elevator that went to the Cardiac
Section and he finally met our new
American Citizen, Tranle Granlie.
He told me last night over the
telephone how much he enjoyed the
visit and that he had not had that
much excitement since he was on
the USS Vincennes off of DaNang,
where, by the way, Tranle is from.
I felt bad that we had put
Daniel in such a predicament but
he said that it was worth it and the
great reward was seeing the smile
on Tranle’s face. When I received
the photograph I asked Dan how
tall he was because he towered
over Tranle’s. He said that he is
only 5’10” but Tranle is pretty
small in stature.
So there you have it.
Sometimes becoming an
American Citizen is a difficult road
to hoe. Was it worth it? Well to two
people, strangers, one American
Legionnaire and one Nurse from
Vietnam, I would say yes it was.
Tranle’s journey will go on as
she continues her love of our country
and friends that she meets every day.
Oh, as I said in our previous article,
she giggles a lot. Dan Nardinger,
Carbon Post 17, noticed it also.
