Pumps

These are machines which convert the energy into mechanical work

Pumps impart pressure energy to liquid to transfer it from one place to

other
• Displacement Pumps
• Reciprocating
• Screw
• Gear

• Kinetic pumps
• Centrifugal pumps
• Eductors (Ejectors)
Displacement Pumps
• The liquid moves as per the internal motion of the pump
• Liquid is physically pushed due to internal movement of the pump

• Liquid is trapped in the pump, within casing and the moving

component, hence it follows the internal movement Of the pump

• Clearance between casing of the pump and the moving component is

very very small (called sliding clearance)
Kinetic pumps
• Kinetic energy is responsible for the movement of the liquid

• In centrifugal pumps, kinetic energy is imparted to the liquid –

causing its displacement

• In Eductors (Ejectors) Due to Venturi effect pressure imbalance is

created
• This results in creating suction effect at the neck of the
eductors.
Reciprocating Pump
Gear Pump
Screw Pumps
Centrifugal Pump
Disadvantages of the centrifugal pumps

• It is not self priming

• Its discharge pressure is less
• It cannot handle large quantity of air/vapour –not suitable for
stripping operation
• It cannot handle high viscous liquids
• It cannot handle high temperature liquids.

• Advantages and disadvantages of the displacement pumps are

opposite to that of centrifugal pumps
Advantages of the centrifugal pumps

• Its discharge rate is high

• It can be started with discharge valve closed/throttled
• It is compact in size
• It is cost effective
• It is robust in operation
• It requires less maintenance and maintenance cost is less
• It can be operated and maintained even by semiskilled people
