SYLLABUS FOR GRADUATE COURSES

I. COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE NUMBER DIT 305 NO. OF UNITS 3

COURSE TITLE Advanced Data Mining and Visualization

PREREQUISITE/S

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM DIT

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course on data mining and visualization covers methodology and applications
in this field. It introduces the topic of data mining (also known as Knowledge Dis-
covery from Data or KDD) and visualization. It covers the basic concepts, principles,
related methods, and implementation techniques of data mining with applications
focusing on the two major data mining functions: (1) pattern discovery and (2) clus-
ter analysis. In pattern discovery, students will learn why patterns in data are im-
portant, how these patterns can be efficiently mined, and how to apply pattern dis-
covery in some interesting applications. Other related concepts that will be discussed
include (1) study methods for mining diverse kinds of frequent patterns, sequential
patterns; (2) pattern evaluation measures; (3) Visualization techniques; and (4) con-
straint-based pattern mining and their applications. In cluster analysis, students will
become familiar with concepts and methodologies for cluster analysis. Cluster analy-
sis is also known as clustering, data segmentation, or unsupervised learning. This

topic will introduce students to the most commonly used clustering methodologies,
algorithms, and applications. Methodologies for clustering validation will also be dis-
cussed.

techniques: frequent pattern mining, association, correlation, clustering, and outlier analysis.

CLO 2: Evaluate the performance of different data-mining algorithms and propose data-mining so-
lutions for different applications.

CLO 3: The student will also become familiar with a wide range of visualizations techniques from
which he/she can select to properly present both to specialists and to general public results of per-
formed data mining.
