Surface Preparation Materials, Tools and Equipment Types

and Uses

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet, YOU MUST be able to;

a) define the different materials, carpentry tools for surface

preparation
b) list the phases of surface preparation

Introduction
Finishing carpentry is the last step in the remodeling or carpentry
process. It deals with the aesthetic part of carpentry which involves the
installation of finish woods, trims, crown molding, wainscoting, stairs,
wall paneling, windows, built-in bookshelves, fireplace surrounds, and
other design elements.

Surface preparation is the process of treating the surface a substance in

order to increase its adhesion to coatings. The single most important
function that influences coating performance is the quality of surface
preparation, can be done mechanically or chemically.

The following are the materials used in furniture

making/finishing.

Measuring Tools

Measuring tools are essential for many

different types of jobs or exercises. For
measuring length, rulers are the accepted
choice. There are various types of rulers,
including yardsticks and tape measures, that
can measure different distances.

Wood rasps files

This set of wood rasps contains three

different tools. You will have access to both
flat wood rasps and curved wood rasps. Each
of these is going to come in handy at different
points in time. They are eight inches long and
will work fantastically to help you file down
wood to where you need it to be.

Claw Hammer

Claw hammers are among the most

common types of tools on the market. You
can buy a claw hammer at pretty much any
department store. They are affordable tools
that will see a lot of use. The claw hammer
being shown here is pretty standard overall,
featuring a durable steel head and a wooden
handle.

Chisels
A chisel is another tool that is going to
be invaluable when you work as a finish
carpenter. You need to be able to use a chisel
to finish up many projects. It can be an
important tool for removing tile and it is also
important in woodworking projects. This tool
is fairly versatile, making it something that
will come in handy during many jobs.

Utility knife

Utility  knives are common tools that

carpenters will keep around. When it comes
to finishing carpentry, you will need to be
able to make cuts when installing certain
things. You also may want to have the utility
knife around to simply open certain
packages. It’s a tool that is undeniably useful
and simple to purchase.

Marking gauge

Marking gauge will help you to mark

off pieces of wood that you are working on.
When you are trying to finish up a project, it
is important to be able to stay as accurate as
possible. Making detailed markings is going
to allow you to stay on task and avoid any
mistakes. A good marking gauge is simply
going to make the process simpler than it
would otherwise be.

Square

A square is another important
measurement tool that you should know
about. Having a square is going to help you
to make sure that your measurements are as
accurate as possible. This is great when you
have complex woodworking projects to do. It
will be handy for many measurement needs
when you’re working as a finishing carpenter.

Clamps

Clamps are important when you need to

hold something in place you will be using
clamps for many different purposes. Even
when you have simply working on building
something, being able to hold it in place with a
clamp is a must.

Spoke shave

A spoke shave is something that you

will use when you are finishing up making
something such as a chair or a table. You will
be able to shave off bits of wood that you need
to take away. All of the pieces of your chair or
table must fit properly in order for things to
turn out perfectly. The spoke shave can help
you to shape your piece of wood just right

Phases of Surface Preparation

1. Coating Removal - Once the current condition of the materials has

been determined the old coating can be removed from the surface. If this
is not done and the new coating is applied directly to the old coating
bubbles, flaking and other damage will occur, causing the new coating to
come off quickly. By thoroughly removing the old coating, the new
coating will adhere nicely to the surface.

2. Removal of surface contaminants - Not only the old coating; other

dirt that has developed on the surface must also be removed. Over time,
for example, rust, mill scale and other dirt may develop on the surface.
As with the removal of the old coating, it is also important to remove
these contaminants form the surface. If this is not done properly, it can
also lead to adhesion problems of the new coating.

3. Removal of Loose Dirt - Besides the fact that rust, mill scale and
other adhesion problems can occur, a surface often also has to deal with
loose dirt. This can include flaking or crumbling pieces of the old
coating. These too must be removed during the surface preparation
process in order to ensure proper adhesion of the new coating.

4. Apply the adhesion profile to the surface - Once the old coating
and all types of dirt have been removed, it is the time to apply a profile
on the surface. When a proper surface profile is applied, the new coating
will adhere better than on a smooth surface.

5. Dry the surface - Once the adhesion profile has been applied to the
surface, it is time for the sixth and final step of surface preparation:
drying. New coatings will, in most cases, adhere better to a wet surface.
If the coating were applied to a wet surface, small grains will form in the
materials as it dries. To avoid this, it is necessary to dry the surface
thoroughly first. If the sixth steps of surface preparation are performed
accurately and carefully, the chances that the new coating will adhere
nicely to the surface will be greatly increase.

Job Specifications or Work Requirement

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet, YOU MUST be able to;

a) define the common job requirements; and

b) enumerate the purpose of job specification

Introduction
Job listings often include a general description of the role's
responsibilities, an introduction to the company, what benefits and
compensation the company is willing to offer and the job requirements.

These requirements describe what qualifications the employer is

looking for in ideal candidates.

Work experience
Work experience is how much time you have spent in positions
similar to the one you are applying for. Employers use this to determine
how familiar you are with the role and how much training you have in
the position or similar ones. Higher level positions require more
experience than entry level roles because professionals usually gain
more complex responsibilities the longer they work in an industry.

Skills
Each position requires different skills to successfully complete the
work. These include technical, soft and hard skills. Technical skills
include working with computers, such as computer programming,
technical writing, data analysis and project management. Soft skills are
those that involve working with people, like communication, critical
thinking. Leadership and problem-solving hard skills require job specific
training, such as working with industrial machinery and other
technology.

Professional licenses, accreditations and certifications
Many job require or prefer professional licenses, accreditations or
certifications to ensure candidates meet industry standards or can
perform specialized task on the job. These usually involve gaining work
experience, pursuing continuing education and passing exam. Earning
either required or preferred licenses, accreditations and certifications
may be applicable for highly technical fields, including architects,
computer programmers, nurses, doctors and engineers.

Specific knowledge
Specific knowledge is the information a candidate needs to know
that cannot be included in other categories. Specific knowledge is often
highly specialized and is developed through extensive research, practical
experience and personal curiosity. For example, a repair shop might
specify that they are looking for a mechanic who is an expert on hybrid
vehicles. Many job listings include specific knowledge, but it is especially
common in highly technical fields like engineering, design and research.

Personal traits and attributes

Personal traits and attributes describe the kind of person who is
best suited for the position and the company. Including traits and
attributes in a job listing highlight elements of the working environment,
corporate culture and team dynamic and help employers find candidates
who are likely to get along with team members and management and
have personalities that align with the company’s values. These qualities
may include passion, dedication, and teamwork, interest in learning new
things, attention to detail and creativity.

Languages
Most job listings include what physical activities candidates are
expected to be able to accomplish with or without accommodations.
These can include standing or sitting for long periods of time, bending or
twisting and how much you are expected to be bale to lift. These are so
applicants can determine if they can do the work with reasonable
changes to the work environment.

Types of Surface Preparation
A. Staining
Oil stain is easy to apply. It is available in many colors and makes an
excellent finish. Generally, it will not raise the grain of the wood. Stain
wood in one application. It is simply wiped on with cloth.
Steps in Staining:
1. Decide what color stain you want.
2. Pour some stain into cup or other container
3. To test the color, brush or wipe the stain on a scrap piece of wood you
will be staining. If the color is too dark, lighten it by adding synthetic
thinner.
4. Put a coat of linseed oil on all exposed end grain. Soak up 8 more
stain. As a result, it will become darker than the rest of the wood.
B. Sealing
Apply lacquer sealer or sanding sealer on the project before putting on
the first coat of lacquer. This seals the wood as shellac as varnish does.
Steps in Sealing:
1. Using fine sand paper, sand the wood smoothly.

2. Mix the sealer with an equal amount of lacquer thinner. Stir the
mixture.

3. Fill sealer on the wood surface.

4. Apply a full, even coat of the sealer with brush, roller or spray gun.

5. Let it dry for at least 2 hours.

6. Sand lightly with # 400 of sand paper. Sand with the grain of the
wood surface

7. Apply a second coat of sanding sealer if desired. Two coats are

generally enough for a sealing.

Job Specification or Work Requirement

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet, you must be able to;

a. identify the components of job specification and

b. enumerate the advantages and disadvantages of job

requirement

Introduction

A job specification defines the knowledge, skills and abilities that

are required to perform a job in an organization.

Job specification covers aspects like education, work-experience,

managerial experience etc. which can help accomplish the goals related
to the job. Job specification helps in the recruitment & selection process,
evaluating the performance of employees and in their appraisal &
promotion. Job specification, along with job description, is actually
derived from job analysis. Collectively, job specification and job
description help in giving a overview of the job in terms of its title,
position, roles, responsibilities, education, experience, workplace etc.

Components of Job Specification

There are many parameters which are considered while giving the
job specification for a certain profile.
1. Educational Qualification
This parameter gives an insight on how qualified a certain
individual is. It covers their basic school education, graduation, masters
degree, other certifications etc.
2. Experience

Job specification clearly highlights the experience required in a
particular domain for completing a specific job. It includes work
experience which can be from a specific industry, position, duration or
in a particular domain.
3. Skills & Knowledge
This is an important parameter in job specification especially with
knowledge and skill based profiles. The higher the position in a
company, the more niche the skills become and more is the knowledge
required to perform the job. Skills like leadership, communication
management, time management, team management etc. are mentioned.
4. Personality traits and characteristics
The way in which a person behaves in a particular situation,
handles complex problems, generic behaviour etc. are all covered in the
characteristics of a job description. It also covers the emotional
intelligence of a person i.e how strong or weak a person is emotionally

Advantages of Job Specification

There are several benefits of having a comprehensive job specification.

Some advantages are listed below:
1. Job specification highlights all the specific details required to perform
the job at its best
2. It gives the HR managers a threshold and a framework on the basis
on which they can identify the best prospects
3. Helps in screening of resumes and saves time when there are multiple
applications by choosing those who are closest to the job specification
4. HR managers can used job specification as a benchmark to evaluate
employees and give them required trainings
5. It also helps companies during performance appraisal and promotions

Disadvantages of Job Specification

There are certain limitations of job specification. Some of the

disadvantages are mentioned below:
1. It is a time consuming process as it has to be very thorough and
complete
2. Job description is time bound and changes with changing technology
and changing knowledge & skill requirements

Put Away Process

Learning Objectives:

After reading this information sheet, YOU MUST be able to;

a) define the contribution of put away process in business

growth and put away strategy support; and
b) enumerate tips in warehouse put away process.

Introduction
Put away process refers to all the processes that happen
between receiving goods from vendors and having they all put away
into their assigned places. Having a put away system simplifies the
process of storing items, and keeps your warehouse clean and
organized.

The contribution of put away to your business growth:

Market Penetration
Increasing market share using existing products and extending
your reach within the market to sell more

Market Development
Selling existing products in a new market to increase profits

Product Development
Expansion of a product line or addition of new features to
increase sales and profits

Diversification
Selling new products into new markets following extensive
market research

Put away strategy supports your business growth:

Warehouse Capacity
Your put away strategy, driving a rational and structured
approach to storage and access to goods, can help you to optimize the
space in your warehouse according to your requirements and highest
traffic, and improve your use of space in a product-focused way.

Rey
This means you can get more into the space available, and
ultimately sell more without needing to expand you warehouse
premises.

Stock Availability
Stock availability is a major consideration for any growing business,
and ensuring you have stock on hand is a two-part problem:

 Knowing that your physical inventory is quickly and easily

accessible, and has been logged and packed accurately
 Knowing that incoming shipments will be processed efficiently
and in time to deliver the stock to your customers.

Your put away process ensures that both these boxes are checked.

Reduce Damage
A put away strategy should help you to store products and
goods in a way that reduces your losses due to damage, whether by
human error, storage damage, or display.

Improving your put away strategy helps to ensure that the

number of damaged goods within your warehouse – and leaving it
bound for customers – is reduced drastically, improving customer
satisfaction and saving you money on losses.

Reduce Travel
Your products should travel to your receiving bay, and then
follow the put away strategy to be stored, packed, and tracked. The
less handling the goods go through, the better they are cared for, and
this, in-turn, ensures a smooth transition of a quality product to a
happy customer.

The faster you can access the product, the faster you can fulfill
your orders. Efficiency, speed, and accuracy are critical here and your
aisle health is a primary target for improvement.

Tips in Warehouse Put Away Process

1. Collect the Correct Data and Analytics

Before your put away process even begins, you are going to
want to collect the correct data in order to make this go as smoothly

Date Developed Document No.

as possible. Consider your goals, you want to find the most optimal
storage location for product. With this in mind, consider noting cargo
size, weight, and height, receiving and shipping frequency, the cargo
type, sales volume, current storage availability, and any other data
you feel would be useful.
2. Create a Timeline to Stick to
As items are received, they should be put away as quickly as
possible. This will help clear space for more incoming items, and make
fulfilling orders simpler and hassle-free. In order to make this process
as quick as possible, create a timeline with well-coordinated directions
for every employee. Remember, a slow put away process could mean
delayed order fulfillment, held up shipping, or congestion on the
warehouse floor.
3. Modernize Your WMS
A dated warehouse management system (WMS) can slow down
your warehouse and make it more difficult to create an efficient and
seamless put away process. A quick way to optimize this is to invest in
a modern warehouse management system that can seamlessly
communicate with your ERP (or other homegrown software) and
expedite receiving capabilities. This will not only speed up the put
away process, but make product ready for pick up.

4. Make Sure Items Are Placed Correctly the First Time

Pickers will go out on your warehouse floor expecting to find
items in their designated areas. If your put away employees are not
placing product in the correct spaces on their first try, customers
might receive an incorrect order or their shipment will be delayed.
In order to minimize this from happening, follow your
warehouse management software instructions to store the item in a
specific slot. Your warehouse employee will need to scan the barcode
or RF tag on the item as well as the slot to improve accuracy.

5. Minimize Damaged Items in Put Away Process

Items can become damaged during the put away process for a
number of reasons, including being handled and moved around too
roughly. They can also be hit by moving vehicles such as forklifts if
left in the incorrect area, or stepped on by people walking by.

Furniture Making Developed by: Issued by: Page

Rey
In order to prevent this, create an efficient put away process,
and hold each member of staff accountable for their part of the
process. A proper warehouse management system will help to provide
a straightforward and successful process with minimal room for error.

6. Track All Item Locations Correctly

If you are not tracking or making notes of where every unique
product is being put away, you will have to rely on workers’ knowledge
and memory. While this might work for very small operations, the
larger your warehouse stock becomes, the more difficult this will be.
Find a system that will display real-time reporting, so that you
never have to go searching for product or rely on another employee’s
knowledge of where it might be.

7. Count Items Before They Are Put Away

When new product arrives at the receiving dock, you should
appoint a specific member of your team to count it and verify all
product has been received. Where many warehouses go wrong is
ending the counting process here. Product should be counted a
second time as the worker places it on the shelf. Knowing where items
are is important, but having an idea of the current quantity is
essential.

8. Reduce Traveling Time

You have probably heard this before, but it cannot be reiterated
enough. Creating a map in order to reduce travelling time from the
receiving area to the final location where the product will be stored is
an essential piece when optimizing the put away process. Go over this
route with all employees, and make sure they are following it every
time new goods are received.

9. Use Direct Put Away When Possible

Direct Put Away is a great practice to use in order to increase
speed and efficiently. In this method, cargo is directly moved from the
receiving area to its final destination without going through a staging
phase. Chosen staging locations are not required, so this particular
approach requires less handling and less space within the warehouse
to be completed.

In order to complete this practice, your WMS will need to have
the capabilities to assign final locations from Advance Shipment
Notice as soon as the cargo is delivered at the receiving dock.

10. Keep Warehouse Clean and Organized

While this point may go without saying, you would be surprised
how many warehouses are not particularly clean or organized. This
truly makes all the difference in running an efficient put away
process, and should not be taken lightly.
A cluttered or disorganized warehouse will have an immediate
impact on the amount of time it takes to put product away, and locate
it later on. Even if you are using the most modern warehouse
technology and have a streamlined process, you need to keep your
warehouse clean and organized to guarantee efficiency.
Optimizing the put away process and increasing warehouse
efficiency can be done with these simple and easy-to-incorporate tips.
Take the time to consider the practices your warehouse could improve
on, such as investing in a more current WMS technology, reducing
travel time, collecting necessary data before the put away process, and
creating a streamlined plan that can be executed efficiently by your
team.
