HISTORICAL BACKGROUNG OF COCA COLA KWANZA LTD COMPANY

Coca-Cola Kwanza Limited Mbeya is the part of Coca –Cola Beverage Africa group of
companies based in South Africa with the vision to be the best bottlers in the word. The plant is
situated in Mbeya-Iyunga industrial area plot No.35.The Company deals with the production,
distribution and marketing of non-alcoholic carbonated drinks and still water. The company
produce the following products, Fanta orange, Fanta passion, Fanta pineapple, Stoney
Tangawizi, Spalletapinute, Novida, Dasani still water, Fanta fruit blast, zero products, Sprite,
Tonic water, S/cream soda and soda water.

Coca-Cola is the most popular and biggest-selling soft drink in the world, as well as the best-
known product in the world. Was discovered in Atlanta, Georgia, by Dr. John S. Pemberton,
Coca-Cola was first offered as a cascade beverage by mixing Coca-Cola syrup with carbonated
water. Coca-Cola was introduced in 1886, patented in 1887, registered as a trademark in 1893
and by 1895 it was being sold in every state and territory in the United States. In 1899, The
Coca-Cola Company began franchised bottling operations in the United States. -In Africa are
available in the following territories: - Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa,
Tanzania, Uganda. The seeds of Coca-Cola Kwanza (CCK) were sown on a warm Christmas Eve
in 1952, when the first Coca-Cola bottled in the east African country rolled off the production
lines. Then called Tanganyika Bottlers, it was owned by Greek businessman Aris Cassolis. The
country gained independence in 1961 and changed its name to Tanzania in 1964, following the
union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Cassolis was quick to follow suit, proudly changed his
company’s name to Tanzania Bottlers. In the decades that followed, growth was somewhat
sluggish and the company changed hands. In 1995, when Coca-Cola Sabco became the majority
shareholder in Tanzania Bottlers Ltd, the company’s name again evolved to become Kwanza
Bottlers, (meaning ‘first’ in Swahili), and later Coca-Cola Kwanza (CCK) Coca-Cola Kwanza
also has bottling plants in Mbeya. The main business of the Coca-Cola Kwanza Limited is to
produce soft drinks and sell them to customer at a reasonable price. The company produces and
sells the following products; Coca-Cola, Fanta Orange, Fanta Passion, Fanta Pineapple, Sprite,
Stoney Tangawizi, Krest Tonic, Krest Soda water, Coke Light, Fanta Twist, Sparletta Pinenut,
Krest Bitter Lemon, Sparletta Citrus, coca cola zero, Novida and Dasani and Viva water. These
products are measured in different volumes such as 200ml, 300ml, 350ml and 1Litre and packed
in different packaging materials like plastic, glass and aluminum cans. Coca-Cola Kwanza
Limited Mbeya was found in 1991 by Mac Holding Company of Dar-es Salaam. In 1994 Mark
holdings sold its shares to Coca-Cola SABACO (South Africa Bottling Company) later Coca-
Cola Sabco merge with SABMiller (57.0%), the Coca-Cola Company (11.3%) and Coca-Cola
sabaco (31.7%) shareholding to form Coca-Cola Beverage Africa. Today CCK-Mbeya is serving
seven regions that are Iringa, Njombe, Ruvuma, Mbeya, Songwe, Rukwa and Katavi. The
company is structured into three core competency Manufacturing, commercial, logistic other two
support competencies Human resource and Finance. Coca-Cola Kwanza –Mbeya manufactures
carbonated soft drinks packaged in 250ml, 350ml, 300ml and 500ml Returnable Glass Bottles
(RGB) with the capacity of filling 36000bph.To meet the current and future demand for the
Coca-Cola products as well as to cope with the technological changes in the market, the
company expands the existing facility by installing the PET production line.

providing standard products under Tanzania Bureau of Standard (TBS).

1.5 ARCHEVEMENTS OF COCA COLA


 The first coke was served in Africa in 1928 and currently account for about
40% of all coca –cola volumes sold in Africa serving over 600,000 outlets.
 CCBA enjoys the number 1NARTD position in most of our 14territories, with
a theoretical capacity of 1.5 billion-unit cases.
 CCBA has investing in the growth and development of people enhances their
skills and capabilities. CCBA has more than 17000 employees, about half of
whom are based in South Africa.

 CCBA they focused on accelerating growth and social development in their


value chain. They produce and sell their products in responsible way by
minimizing their impact on the environment.

1.6 CHALLENGES OF COCA COLA KWANZA COMPANY


I: Raw materials supply; since most of raw material are imported from external
countries thus due to transportation distance and cost to be high from country to
country, the border restriction due to corona disease or other communicable disease
eruption.
II: Production breakdown, always occurs during production of beverages the
machines does not work efficiently thus leads to stoppage of production. For
example, pump failure, filling unit failure, date coder failure
III: Sales and marketing; the company still struggle to get enough market of the
beverage’s due competition from other soft drinks producers, weather condition (low
season) cold season the consumption of soft drinks is minimal as compared to dry
season.
