The poem describes a difficult conversation between two former friends. One person tries to confront the other about their wrongdoings and mistakes in the relationship. However, the confrontation does not go well, as the person being confronted becomes defensive and refuses to admit any fault. As a result, the friendship ends amid bitterness and lost trust between both people.

So save your breath, I will not hear. I think I made it very
clear. You couldn't hate enough to love. Is that supposed to be enough? I only wish you weren't my friend. Then I could hurt you in the end. I never claimed to be a saint... my own was banished long ago / it took the death of hope to let you go. So break yourself against my stones and spit your pity in my soul, you never needed any help, you sold me out to save yourself and I won't listen to your shame, you ran away - you're all the same, angels lie to keep control... my love was punished long ago if you still care, don't ever let me know.
If I knew how to save life...
Step one you say we need to talk he walks you say
sit down it's just a talk, he smiles politely back at you, you stare politely right on through, some sort of window to your right, as he goes left and you stay right, between the lines of fear and blame and you begin to wonder why you came. Let him know that you know best cause after all you do know best, try to slip past his defense without granting innocence, lay down a list of what is wrong, the things you've told him all along, and pray to God he hears you. As he begins to raise his voice you lower yours and grant him one last choice, drive until you lose the road or break with the ones you've followed, he will do one of two things; he will admit to everything or he'll say he's just not the same and you'll begin to wonder why you came. Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend, somewhere along in the bitterness and I would have stayed up with you all night, had I known how to save a life?!
