Time Delay Report

Peter Beaini - Imad H. Elhajj - Ayman Kayssi

American University of Beirut
The aim of this report is to assess the time difference from when the application was run on the
PlayStation and the time when new packets (relating to the application) begin to appear on the capture
device. This test was run on three different applications YouTube, Netflix, and Web Browsing. We
recorded the time at which the application was clicked and the exact time the new packet was captured.

Test 1: YouTube

At 11:10:10 YouTube was opened.

The first packet that relates to YouTube was received at 11:10:12.

Test 2: Netflix

At 11:18:05 Netflix was opened.

A packet is captured at 11:18:05, destination 8.8.8.8 which is a google DNS query related to Netflix
address resolution.
Test 3: Web Browsing (Google)

At 11:26:50 www.google.com page was opened.

The first packet related to www.google.com page was captured at 11:26:51.

Conclusion: The time delay from when an application is opened to when the first packet was captured
was around 1 second. This is not meant to be a formal and accurate assessment of the time delay
between when packets are sent from the PlayStation to when they are captured. Rather, this is just
meant to facilitate identifying initial packets related to a certain application within the dataset.
