GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The patented NFP2000® is a fixed fire suppression system that is easily installed on
almost any type of mobile or stationary plant, equipment, machinery and vehicles.
Designed and manufactured in Australia, the system greatly reduces risk to people
and property by providing effective fire protection and therefore safer operating
conditions. The system has been specifically designed to suppress hydrocarbon fuel
and oil fires (class B - liquid based) by application of a foam-extinguishing agent.
When a hydrocarbon fuel is ignited, it is not the fuel, but the vapours that are burning.
For the fire to sustain combustion, you need the following factors: Fuel, oxygen, heat
and chain reaction. If any of these are eliminated, the fire will go out. The functions of
the foam are to cut off the oxygen supply, act as a vapour seal over the fuel and at
the same time cool the area due to the water content in the foam which greatly
reduces the risk of re-ignition. (Also gives excellent control over class A fires).
The flexibility of the NFP2000® design allows it to be custom fitted to any equipment.
The system consists of an unique patented unstressed diaphragm head assembly,
mounted on a pressurised (1200 kPa) stainless steel cylinder, activated by manual
actuation modules or automatic detection tube, and a loop of high standard fire rated
hose with a series of nozzles aimed at high risk areas (turbo, fuel system etc) and
potential ignition sources thus providing a general foam blanket coverage.
The system can be activated manually from a valve inside the driver’s cabin or from
a unit that is fitted externally in an easily accessible location on the vehicle. In
addition to the manual valve, an auto-detect tube assembly is fitted that will activate
the system automatically. It is made from a synthetic material designed to melt in the
heat of a fire, and the resulting pressure drop in the activation circuit will trip the
discharge.
For integration into the engine management system, the NFP2000® is supplied with a
pressure switch in the actuation circuit, which provides an electrical signal on
discharge and triggers an alarm or initiates engine shutdown as desired.
During operation, the nozzles will spray a full cone pattern of foam. Various sizes of
cylinders are available to accommodate the required area coverage (number of
nozzles) and discharge period.
All hosing is designed to withstand the intense heat of a fire, with the exception of the
auto-detect tube, which is designed to fail (melt) to activate the system. Nozzles,
fittings and head assemblies are made from brass and therefore corrosion resistant.
The system operates on pressure differential (rather than numerous moving and
sliding parts) and requires minimal maintenance. It can be recharged easily (water,
foam and Nitrogen), resulting in almost no downtime and very low running costs.
PRECAUTIONARY NOTICES
♦ ALL INSTALLATION, COMMISSIONING AND SERVICING SHOULD BE
PERFORMED BY ACCREDITED PERSONNEL ONLY.
SYSTEM OPERATION
A. IN CASE OF FIRE
When a fire starts, the way you react is very important. As soon as you become
aware of a fire, do the following things:
1. If you are in no immediate danger, turn off the engine. If at all possible, do not
leave the equipment or machinery running; it may add more fuel and oil resulting
in the fire spreading faster.
2. Turn the valve handle on the fire suppression activation module anti-clockwise to
activate the system.
B. EXPLANATION
Quickly retreat from the fire to protect yourself against wind blown flames, smoke,
gases and other dangers created by the fire. Fires are very unpredictable and can
turn suddenly, flare up, turn into a fireball by sudden ignition of large quantity of fuel.
It is important to keep your distance until the fire has been knocked down by the fire
suppression system.
Residual heat from the fire could cause re-ignition after the system has discharged
and therefore it is important that someone stand by, at a safe distance, with a
portable fire extinguisher. This stand-by should be maintained until expert attention
has arrived or there is no possibility of re-ignition.
The engine should not be restarted until the Equipment and Fire Suppression System
have been inspected, repaired, serviced and cleaned to ensure that the fault causing
the fire has been rectified and the Fire Suppression System is fully operational for
continued protection.
The NFP2000® Fire Suppression System has been primarily designed to protect life
and if possible also save the equipment. Therefore this system is for the protection of
the operator or driver as well as other people in the immediate area.
RECHARGING INSTRUCTIONS
• Break seal on bung to release any possible remaining pressure in the system.
• Remove head from cylinder and flush cylinder with clean water.
• Flush out all the hoses with clean water and check that nozzles operate correctly.
Clean nozzles if required. Ensure that all nozzle caps are fitted.
• Check Auto Fire Detection tube (if fitted) and replace if required.
• Turn handles on actuation modules to closed position and replace safety ties.
• Fill cylinder with clean water and add foam charge as per following requirements :
• Check sealing surfaces and O-ring seal on head assembly and cylinder bung.
• Screw head assembly and bung onto cylinder. Ensure both have O-rings fitted.
• Charge cylinder with Nitrogen through the charging connection until the master
gauge registers the correct working pressure of 1200kPa at 23º ±2ºC.
• Record recharging details on attached service tag (and Log book if required).
WARNING
RECHARGING SHOULD ONLY BE CARRIED OUT
USING SPECIFIED APPROVED NITROGEN CHARGING
ASSEMBLY PART No. 69 344 180.
OTHER APPARATUS ARE NOT RECOGNISED BY THE
MANUFACTURER AND MAY CAUSE INJURY.
3 Year service
In addition the normal yearly requirements as listed in the schedule on the
previous page, please carry out the following:
• Check interior of cylinder for corrosion.
• Under harsh environmental conditions, hydrostatic test of cylinder is
required. Cylinder must be tested to 2.5MPa by an authorised testing
station in accordance with AS2337.1
• Renew all the seals throughout the whole system.
• Replace the Auto-Detection tube (if fitted).
5 Year service
In addition the normal yearly requirements as listed in the schedule on the
previous page, please carry out the following:
• The cylinder must be replaced or hydrostatically tested to 2.5MPa by an
authorised testing station in accordance with AS2337.1
• Renew all the seals throughout the whole system.
• Replace the Auto-Detection tube (if fitted).
Servicing must be carried out by authorised personnel to comply with the warranty
conditions and Australian Standards AS1851-1 and AS2030-1.
Please note that these Standards are continuously reviewed, and compliance must
be with latest issue of relevant Australian Standard.
NON COMPLIANCE WITH ABOVE SCHEDULE MAY VOID WARRANTY.
INSPECTION CHECK
• Record this service on the service tag by stamping the figure “5”
in the appropriate date field of the tag. Write service details into
site logbook as required.
PLEASE NOTE
IF THE SYSTEM WAS ACTIVATED TO SUPPRESS A FIRE, ALL PARTS
SHOWING SIGNS OF FIRE DAMAGE MUST BE REPLACED.
FFFP foam concentrate; Safety ties for modules; Nozzle dust caps; O-rings
for cylinder head and bung; Dust cap for vent valve; Replacement charging
valve; O-rings for actuation line fittings.
