It is widely believed in rural Mindanao that superstitions such as black
cats, broken mirrors, trimming of nails at night, Friday the 13th, and the evil
eye (pamuyag in Bisaya) bring bad luck. According to a survey by Curaza
(2021), roughly 65% of elders still adhere to these superstitions and pamahiin,
making them a part of the culture. Elders warn that when a black cat passes
in front or beside you, it will bring a day of endless bad luck, and advise you to
stay at home for the rest of the day. Broken mirrors are believed to be a sign
of death for those who look at them, and elders say that burying the broken
glass will counter the curse. Trimming of nails is also thought to bring death.
While Friday the 13th originated in the Western world, it is still believed to
cause bad luck among families, although younger generations are not as
superstitious about it. The most common superstition in Mindanao, especially
in Davao del Norte, is pamuyag, which is thought to cause evil to those an evil
person intends to harm.
