Activity Infinitive
Directions: Underline the infinitive in each of the following sentences. Write NOUN, ADJECTIVE, or
ADVERB to identify its function in the sentence. If it is a NOUN write S (Subject), DO (Direct Object or
PN (Predicate Nominative).
Example 1: To paint is his only ambition.
Answer: To paint is his only ambition. NOUN – S
Example 2: The puppy only wants to play.
Answer: The puppy only wants to play. NOUN – DO
Example 3: His dream was to fly.
Answer: His dream was to fly. NOUN – PN
Example 4: She’s the swimmer to watch.
Answer: She’s the swimmer to watch. ADJECTIVE (to watch modifies the noun swimmer)
Example 5: The one to ask is he.
Answer: The one to ask is he. ADJECTIVE (to ask modifies the pronoun one)
Example 6: To exit, simply press the escape key.
Answer: To exit, simply press the escape key. ADVERB (to exit modifies the verb press)
Example 7: It is easy to find.
Answer: It is easy to find. ADVERB (to find modifies the adjective easy)
