Certain traditions have remained and are quite unique to countries in the English-speaking world.
Anglo-Saxon countries tend to use the 12-hour time system more often instead of the 24-hour system,
with the abbreviations AM and PM to distinguish between midnight and noon and noon and midnight.
The USA and the UK mainly use the unit system ( imperial units ) instead of the metric system that
Australia , Canada , New Zealand and most of the rest of the world use. Also, all the major countries in
the English-speaking world have lunch earlier than most of the rest of the world, usually between 17:30
and 19:30.
There are some cultural differences between the countries of the Anglo-Saxon world, so even in the UK
there are differences between the Welsh, Scottish, English and Northern Irish nations. For the American
case, a quote from George Bernard Shaw sums up the difference that remains between England and the
United States: 'England and the United States are two nations divided by a common language'. Oscar
Wilde , in his novel The Canterville Ghost (1887), also said: "Nowadays we have really everything in
common with America, except, of course, language. ".

the past: a network of various military alliances (e.g. , ANZUS , NATO ) and free trade agreements, some

A global language is one that is spoken by millions of people around the world. English is one such
language. But, as an ESL student will tell you, English is one of the most difficult languages to master.
The simple size of the language and its many linguistic quirks, such as irregular verbs, can be
challenging for students. So how did English become one of the most commonly spoken languages in the
world?

After World War II, technological and medical advances in English-speaking countries made the
language a popular second choice for many students. As international trade grew each year, so did the
need for a common language. The ability to communicate with customers around the world is a valuable
asset in a global economy. Parents, hoping to give their children a foothold in the business world, have
also pushed their children to learn the language. This has helped propel English towards being a global
language.
