Course Name: Engineering Physics
Time: 3.00 hrs Course Code: PH-101
Total Marks = 50

Note: Attempt all the questions.

Define Fermi level. Sketch Fermi level in intrinsic, n-type and p-type
semiconductor.

Explain how a Laser diode differs from the conventional p-n junction diode
used in electronic circuits. On which factor does the wavelength of
semiconductor laser depends.
Describe construction and working of He-Ne laser using appropriate
schematic and energy level diagrams. Discuss the role of Helium in the gas
mixture.

Discuss various types of losses in optical fibres. Based on the loss mechanism,
describe with appropriate diagram the wavelengths which are preferred for
optical fibre communication system.

An optical fibre is made of silica with core refractive index

1.55 and cladding
refractive index 1.51. (3+2)
The fibre has a core diameter of 50µm
and is used at a
light wavelength of 1.3 pm.
(i) Find the acceptance angle and the number of
modes that fibre support. (ii) What should be the core diameter for this fiber
to be single mode at this wavelength?

What was a discrepancy in Ampere's law and how Maxwell modifiettit? The
electric displacement vector is (4+1)
D=0.5Cos(kx-wt) Columb/m2
. Find the
amplitude of displacement current density at 50Hz.
Q.4a
Explain the Compton effect. Derive an expression for the Compton shift and
Compton wavelength. Can the Compton shift be observable with visible
radiation of the electromagnetic spectrum. Explain.
4b
Define the wave function and mention its properties:A particle is confined in
one dimensional box of length
L (region 0<x<L)
wave function 11.1(x)=A Sin(rmx/L). and is represented by the
Estimate the value of A for normalisation of
the wave function.
Q.5a
Define terms superconductivity, critical magnetic field and critical current.
How the critical magnetic field varies with temperature? Show it graphically.
5b
What are ultrasonic waves? Describe one method of their generation. Write
two applications of ultrasonic waves.
