INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is an important means by which an organized society achieves

stability and prosperity. Through the process of Education, the citizens are imbued

with proper attitudes, values and aspirations, necessary to gain knowledge and skills

that will help them achieve maximum self realization.

Working while enrolled can be harmful to student outcomes. Working can

have cost, as time spent working reduces time available for educational activities.

Research has shown that working more than twenty hours per week is associate with

lower grades and relation rates.

Some of positive affect are increased independence, ability to budget,

managing a schedule, and gaining soft skills, such as communication and problem-

solving skills. Some of the negative effects are higher of dropping out, delayed

graduation rates, and negative effects on academic performance.

One of the disadvantages of being a student while holding a job is that they are

often short on time and commonly find themselves with limited time to study, sleep,

and maintain healthy eating habits.

According to Zhang, Shao, Johaston, 2019, The study of working and their

impact of working, and what working aspects may play a role in academic

performance.

that their ultimate reason was to be financially independent. In their answers to the

questionnaire, they also related that experience in the real working environment was

reason, benefits and difficulties of those students is very crucial for students to think

carefully before deciding to work while studying, and for teachers to understand their

difficulties, and for family and friends to help them cope with the stress and

exhaustion (Chantrea, Chansophy, and Chantyta, 2018).

FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

In Tinto’s model of student retention, student integration plays a vital role to students

to fulfill their academic success. There are two kinds of integration in Tinto’s model

of student retention which is the academic retention and the social retention. Acamic

integration comprises of grade/mark performance, personal development, academic

self-esteem, identification with academic norms and values and identification with

one’s role as a student. In social integration, there are also factors which affects

student retention.

If the student cannot integrate in school, the student might feel out of place

which will make them lose the will to continue their collage degree. Working while

studying can also affect the physiological, psychological and social well-being of the

student. Negative consequences on other aspects if in the life of a working student are

also threatening. Lack of sleep is one of the major problems that a working student

faces especially those who work on graveyard shift or night shift such as call centers.

Studies have shown that shift workers getting too little sleep at the wrong time of day

may be increasing their chance of getting type 2 diabetes and heart attacks.

One of the biggest adjustments for every college student who takes part-time

job is mastering the art of being control of their own schedule. Time management of

every working student is very different from a normal college student that is being

enrolled at the school . Every student are required to attend school for specific times
each day, and every schedule of a working student is largely set. In some of the

working student faces difficulties about their time management.
