DISTURBED SOIL SAMPLING, LABELING AND STORAGE
Laboratory Report No.1

OBJECTIVE

This laboratory aims to introduce the proper use and functions of hand auger for obtaining
disturbed soil samples and the standard method of storage of soil for future laboratory use.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

The students shall be able to:

✓ Learn and perform the standard procedure in soil sampling and handling
✓ Perform the soil profiling as observed from the results of the experiment

EQUIPMENTS

✓ Auger Boring Apparatus

✓ Spade or Shovel
✓ Moisture tight sample containers
✓ Pans
✓ Petro wax or paraffin

PROCEDURES

1) Clear the area of grass and vegetation where the sample is to be obtained.
2) With the use of soil auger, the soil is bored until desired depth is reached to obtain a
disturbed sample.
3) Withdraw the auger to the hole and remove the soil for examination and testing.
4) Record the depth and the observations on the soil sample retrieved.
5) Cover sample with petro wax or paraffin after it has been placed in a container.
6) Store sample in a cool room.

CONCLUSIONS

Disturbed soil sampling, labeling and storage is a method used to store a soil sample
from a certain area to investigate the soil and for future use purposes. The following were
observed and recommended as the procedures were being conducted: As the soil auger
bores, the area where the soil sample to be taken should be clean and not rocky for it might
cause the equipment damaged and the soil testing result might also vary. The grease must
be properly spread into the whole internal of cylindrical metal mold to avoid difficulties in
removing of soil and to keep it whole. When the metal mold is being filled, the excess soil
from it must be strike off. By this laboratory procedures, the students were able to
understand and learn the use and functions of auger boring apparatus and the proper storage
of the soil sample.
