School certainly act as a dispenser of knowledge and academic skills development such as the

basics (reading, writing, arithmetic). Education serves many functions and importance in our society.
Shown below are the functions of education (Cheng, 1996).

Functions Description
Intellectual The school aims to teach students the cognitive
skills, transmit knowledge, and help them to
develop critical and cognitive thinking.
Political The school contributes to the political
development of the society at all levels. The
school develops civic attitudes and exercise rights
and responsibilities as a citizen.
Social The school points to human development and
social relationships at different levels in the
society. It is the sincere role of the school aims to
contribute in the development as individual in
aspects of physical, emotional, psychological,
mental and spiritual.
Economic The school wants to prepare students for their
occupational roles in the future.
Cultural The school is geared towards cultural
transmission and development in the society.
Since we do have norms, beliefs, values, and
other practices in the society, it is the role of the
school to develop your awareness on these and
imbibe what are relevant to the students.
Educational In traditional perspective, education and
schooling is an instrument to develop economic,
social, political, cultural goals of the society. The
school is a way to maintain education for us to
achieve these goals.
