Reflection

I choose to do my observation for this assignment at the mall, since I needed to do some Christmas shopping as well. I
sat in the food court near a group of teenagers so I could hear them talk. It was a group of 5 kids, 3 girls and two boys. I
would guess they were between the ages of 15-17 years old. I was not surprised by their conversation, it seemed
typical for kids their age. Honestly, I was expecting more cussing or inappropriate talk then what I actually heard.
Teenagers tend to have their own vocabulary based on their social surroundings. This is the age where friendships are
important as they are developing close friendships and making connections with their peers. Shared experiences, insider
jokes, or common social trends tend to shape their vocabulary. Kids have intrapersonal thoughts, as we all do, but this is
the age they are finding more about themselves and exploring. They are also being more interpersonal with others.

I remember being this age and very close with my friends, in fact my friends at this age were everything. I remember
having slang terms we used. “As If” was said jokingly between my friends and I. it was a phrase from the movie
“Clueless” that we had all seen together. I can think of a lot little examples of words used similarly to that. The kids I
observed in the mall made me think about the friends I spent time together with in high school.

Overtime words can change and have different meanings as we have learned. For example, just try reading William
Shakespeare. Obviously, people talk differently now days and words can change meaning, (semantics), with time; as we
learned from this assignment. As a future educator it is important for me to understand language and all that it
encompasses. Not only am I going to teach my students grammar, writing, and speaking skills, but I must also learn from
the ever evolving and changing world around me and my students.
