Usage of Water Lilies As Environmental Friendly Cups
Usage of Water Lilies As Environmental Friendly Cups
CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Water lilies are considered pests because of their rapid population growth, which
causes aquatic species such as fish to perish due to reduced light penetration. This is the reason
why fish in the Pateros River in the Philippines are no longer alive. Another effect of
significant water loss in dams and reservoirs. Instead of treating water lilies as negative
environmental pollution, it can be used as paper cups. Disposable Cups are made of different
kinds of materials. The first known paper cups were made from paper coated with wax to avoid
spillage. On the latter years many kinds of disposable cups were introduced to the market, there
are those made of Styrofoam which provides a low-cost, light weight option and a good choice
for either cold or hot drinks. The most popular amongst them was the plastic disposable cups
which are made from Polyethylene Terephthalate, an efficient material to produce which also
cost less but has an awful consequence to the environment. (Aghaisuoti,2015). Most paper cups
are lined with sort of plastic that keeps the liquid from seeing out, but it also keeps them from
being recycled. As a result, most of them end up in landfill. Deforestation is the most significant
element in the production of paper cups due to global consumer demands and dependency on
natural resources. Each year, almost 20 million trees are felled to make single-use paper cups. As
a result of loss of million trees, less carbon dioxide is absorbed from our atmosphere, making our
environment more polluted causing irreversible damage to our ecology. In the research entitled
The Materials Used for Biodegradable paper cup Production, the substitution of the virgin woods
used to make paper cup with water Hyacinth is used as midpoint to reduce the impact of
deforestation and environmental pollution. The research used trial method of making a new
replacement material for development of eco-friendly manufacturing. Thus, the claim for the
research gap in the research entitled The Materials Used for Biodegradable Paper Cup
Production did not include water hyacinth in their study, and in this project, the researcher will
examine if water hyacinths that interfere in oxygen exchange due to its rapid growth can be
effective and environmentally friendly paper cups. With the environment and human's sake both
in mind, the researcher decides to introduce a disposable paper cup made from water hyacinth as
an alternative to help reduce deforestation due to extensive use of wood to make paper, pollution
caused by plastic disposable cups, and flooding triggered by water hyacinth rivers and gutters.
The purpose of the study is to determine the potential of water lilies as a main component
for eco-friendly cups Specifically, it attempts to answer the following research questions:
1. How may the conventional environment friendly cup be described in terms of:
1.1 Durability
1.2 Cost-Efficient
1.4 workable
2. How may the alternative environment friendly cup be described in terms of:
2.1 Durability
2.2 Cost-Efficient
2.3Water Resistance
2.4 Workable
5. How may the alternative cups made from water lilies be proposed?
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
HYPOTHESIS
There is no significant difference between the quality, reliability, and environmentally friendly
used of waterlilies as useful paper cups.
