GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY PRACTICUM CANDIDATE PROGRESS ASSESSMENT

Date: December 14, 2022 Name: Hannah Walling

Time: Online School: Chicago International School
Class/Grade: 4th

Process of the Observation

Ms. Walling started instruction with distributing handouts to students. She asked students to write their
names of the papers. After that she gave the agenda of the lesson. They would read an excerpt to focus on
several elements: including, the characters, the place, time, and reasons for action. She said that to think
of the wh word questions to identify the elements: who, what, why, where, and when. She projected
pictures and asked questions to which students responded. She called students by name. She started the
reading with reading the author’s biographical notes. As she read, she asked the students to follow along
with her and provide the ending sentence. She introduced the students to the notion of place, e.g. where
the main character lived. As she read the text the students completed the sentences. She interrupted the
reading to ask questions on the text. She highlighted the main words of the responses. After she modeled
the reading, she asked the students to read paragraphs 4 through 8 to answer the questions that were on
their worksheet. She asked them to annotate the text. She guided them about the number of responses.
Students were divided into groups and sent to various areas of the room. It is on that division that the
video ended.

My Reflections on The Observation

Preparation: Ms. Walling was well prepared. She submitted electronically a lesson plan. She followed
the plan. It was derived from the SIOP models. However, the video seemed to have finished prematurely.
Content: The content related to reading comprehension. It mainly focused on the setting and main
characters. The content was age and level appropriate.
Environment: The environment was conducive of good learning. Students followed. The approach used
was also good. Reading and asking students to complete the sentence allows to check if the students are
engaged. You used three major grouping configurations: Whole, class, and independent. You allowed
students to sit comfortably to read. This was very good to assign corners where they could go to read.

Areas of Improvement
Please introduce pair reading, where two individuals read to each other, ask, and respond questions.

Overall Evaluation

Very good
