Q1. [10 points]:
The diagram below shows a four-way car wheel wrench for tightening and loosening the nuts of the car tire.
The wrench should be able to loosen a nut which requires 100 N.m of torque.
Submit a full design of the wrench. Provide a design summary by stating the material, all lengths, all diameters
and any other information which you think is important.
Materials available are attached.
Your grade for this problem will be based on:
a) Stating all assumptions clearly-------------------------------------------------10%
b) Giving one good reason for the material you have chosen-----------------5%
c) Design procedure AND neatness----------------------------------------------75%
d) Giving one good reason why you think your design is good or bad------5%
e) Design Summary------------------------------------------------------------------5%

Q2. [10 points]:
An electric motor drives the solid steel shaft through pulley B. All the power is delivered to a load through
pulley D. A and C are bearings. All the drive belt forces are shown on the diagram.
The shaft is machined from cold drawn steel with a yield strength of 580 MPa and an ultimate tensile strength
of 690 MPa. The stress concentration factors, due to keyways at the critical section, applied to bending and
torsion are 1.5 and 1.3 respectively.
You are required to design the shaft against fatigue failure using the DE-Goodman failure criterion (or any
other criterion you prefer)
