Midterm Examination, Total Marks – 60, Time- 1 hour 30 minutes, Set-Pineapple
Course Instructor: Dr. Shohana Rahman Deeba (srd1)
Summer 2020

Answer all the questions from the following:

1. (a) Show that if three phase currents, each of equal magnitude and differing in phase by 120 degree,
flow in a three phase winding that are 120 degree apart from each other then it will produce a rotating
magnetic field of a fixed magnitude. (Marks: 8)

(b) Mr. Musa Al Biruni is analyzing a 120 kVA, 60 Hz, 7200-475V, single phase transformer, which
has the following parameters expressed in ohms;
RHS=3.06, XHS=6.05, XM,HS=17809, RLS=0.014, XLS=0.027, Rfe,HS=71400
The transformer is supplying a distribution side load that draws a rated current at 480V and 75
percent power-factor lagging. Sketch the appropriate equivalent circuit and determine (a) the
equivalent resistance and equivalent reactance referred to high side (b) the input voltage to the
transformer (c) the exciting current and its core loss and magnetizing components (d) the input
impedance at no load
(Marks: 1+3+3+3+2=12)
2. (a) A 12 pole, 50 Hz, 20 hp, 220-V, squirrel-cage motor operating at rated condition runs at 480 rpm,
is 85 percent efficient, and has a power factor of 0.73 lagging. Determine (a) synchronous speed (b)
slip (c) line current (d) rated torque (e) rotor frequency
(Marks: 10)
(b) In a transformer test, data from short circuit and open circuit tests of a 75-kVA, 4600-230V, 60Hz
transformer are:
Open circuit test data is referred to Short circuit test data is referred to
low voltage side high voltage side
VOC = 230V VSC = 160.08V
IOC = 13.04A ISC = 16.3A
POC = 521W PSC = 1200W

Determine (a) the magnetizing reactance and core loss resistance (b) the per unit equivalent
impedance (Marks: 5+5=10)

3. (a) Can single phase induction motor be self-started? Explain the operation of a capacitor run single
phase induction motor? (Marks: 7)
(b) A three phase, 6-hp, 60Hz, 115V, 4-pole induction motor is operating at rated voltage, rated
frequency, and 125 percent rated load has an efficiency of 85.4 percent. The stator conductor loss,
rotor copper loss and core loss are 223.2W, 153W, and 114.8W respectively. Sketch the power flow
diagram, enter the given data, and determine i) shaft speed ii) shaft torque (Marks: 3.5*2=7)

(c) Explain the purposes of the following parts of a power transformer: (Marks: 3+3=6)
i) Buckholes relay
ii) High and low voltage bushing
