GERUND & INFINITIVE CONSTRUCTIONS

PART II - GERUND

1. subject of a sentence:
ex.: [Cheating] is wrong.
It is wrong.
[Traveling] is a good way to spend one's money.
It is a good way to spend one's money.
[Listening to music] is very relaxing.
It is very relaxing.
[Singing] is a good way to relax.
[Saving up] is a superb way for you to do the things you want to do that is fairly expensive.

2. object of a sentence: {what?}

ex.: I [think/suppose/ believe] ~cheating~ is wrong.


listening to music is very relaxing.
traveling is a good way to spend one's money.

I think voting is a perfect way to exercise democracy.


I think robbing is a bad attitude.

3. after certain verbs: (verb patterns)

{Verbs of preference: like, love, enjoy, miss, hate, prefer, stand, mind, bear}

ex.: I enjoy [walking] on weekends.


He misses [seeing] his friends.
I love traveling but I don't have a lot of money.
I can't stand people walking slowly in front of me on the sidewalk.

4. after prepositions (on, in, for, at, of, about, to):

ex.: I'm interested in [reading] about literature.


She's good at [playing] the piano.
He's worried about [not getting] a good grade.
I can talk about [dancing] with someone.
I'm really terrible at playing feet sports.

GERUND & INFINITIVE in the Passive Voice

1. Infinitive {verb + to be + past participle}

ex.: He [expected to be noticed] by his boss.


She expects her son to be raised by his father as well.

2. Gerund {verb + being + past participle}

ex.: He [admitted being influenced] by his parents.


She denied being robbed.
