1. Inspection and Testing of Gaskets

To determine gasket mechanical properties, the following type approval
tests are mandatory:
- Shell's cycle test (For spiral wound gaskets see test
specification T-2.232.686),
- Sealing testing shall be done using 1 of the following options:
- Internal pressure test, to determine the maximum pressure
drop from the test rig with a set internal volume in a
given period.
- Sealing test (CETIM procedure) with leakage measurements
with a mass spectrometer.
- Room Temperature Operational Tightness Test (ROTT),
- High temperature Operational Tightness Test (HOTT).
Note: Bolt assembly shall be as specified in specification T-2.232.686.
- HOt Blow-out Testing (HOBT), mainly intended for sheet materials.
- Aged Tensile Relaxation Screening (ATRS) test, for sheet
materials to indicate oxidation resistance. Remark: graphite
purity >= 98% and low sulphur content and low halogen content
will give satisfactory results.
- Medium resistance test, intended for sheet materials to DIN
28090.
- Check application of glue and adhesives their resistance to
chemical attack by any fluid.
- Cold compression / hot creep relaxation test (TEMP), (see DIN
52913 and prEN 13555).
- Fire testing and certification, in accordance with API spec 6FB (or
Total-Elf-Fina test).
- Gasket testing in accordance with new standards created by CEN
TC74 WG 8, as replacement of DIN 28090 parts 1, 2 and 3 and DIN
28091 parts 1, 2, 3 and/or 4.

During above mentioned tests, the following gasket properties shall

be recorded:
- Minimum and maximum assembly gasket stresses, obtained from prEN
13555.
- Minimum and maximum service gasket stresses ( = function of the
pressure to seal) and to be obtained from prEN 13555.
- Dimensional stability (gasket compressibility and recovery
following ASTM F36 or obtained from prEN 13555 and QA standard(s)
prepared by CEN TC74 WG 8.
- Gasket service compression set, needed for gaskets with rubber
compounds.
Otherwise recovery after compression at elevated temperature
shall be measured and quantified as unloading secant modules (see
ASTM F36 and prEN13555).
- Gasket and sealing factors (see ROTT, or DIN 52913 and prEN 13555
for European equivalents),
- Specific leakage rate in relation with the selected tightness
class (see ROTT and prEN 13555 for European equivalent),
- Pressure / creep relaxation percentages over time and for the
whole temperature range (see prEN 13555),

- Mass (density) variability, for sheet gasket materials.

Gasket (insert) parts made of Austenitic stainless steel shall be

capable of successfully passing an intergranular corrosion test in
accordance with ASTM A262, practice E.

The gasket shall not show any adhesion to the adjacent steel
flanges. The test method for adhesion of gasket materials to metal
surfaces shall comply with a modified ASTM F607 (ASTM F607 requires
only one flange to release). It shall be ensured that the gasket
will NOT stick to the adjacent flanges.

Covering layers shall be free from blisters, cracks or other surface

imperfections (e.g. porosity, voids, inclusions or other defects),
which could impair satisfactory performance.
Audited in-house testing and test reports from external testing
institutes are mandatory for gasket type approval testing, to ensure
a controlled gasket selection for tested gaskets and standard
production gaskets.

For gaskets offered for type approval testing, the manufacturer

shall supply an inspection certificate and detailed test report to
ISO 10474-3.1.B, in which he:
- Certifies, that the products supplied comply with the
requirements of the order (i.e. the MESC buying description and
MESC additional requirements (SPE’s) referred to).
- Confirms that this gasket type has successfully passed the type
approval testing, as outlined in this specification.
- Samples for type approval testing are randomly selected.

For standard production gaskets the manufacturer shall supply a

certificate of compliance to ISO 10474-2.1, in which he:
- Certifies, that the products supplied comply with the
requirements of the order (i.e. the MESC buying description and
MESC additional requirements (SPE’s) referred to).
- Confirms that this gasket type has successfully passed the type
approval testing, without mention of any test results.
