Benefits of Bilingual Education

Bilingual Education refers to using multiple languages during teaching or other academic

processes. A bilingual education system means that there will be more than one language in

which the information and knowledge will be given to the students and that they will also have

classes to learn other languages. These education systems are prevalent in countries where

English is not the spoken language. There, it is usual for the students to be taught both the

mother tongue of that country as well as English, as it is considered a universal language.

Such type of education or teaching has proven to be very beneficial for the students who

are educated by it. This education system can prove to be very useful for families who have

migrated to a country that does not share the same native language. A Teacher who will be

teaching there will try to balance both the languages while teaching his subjects. This means the

students will have an easier time adopting or learning the other language. Apart from the benefits

of such an education system in terms of settling into another country, it is scientifically proven

by many studies that it has many mental and intellectual benefits as well.

Examples of such benefits would be Increased cognitive development, resistance to

dementia, Improvements in the executive functions of the brain, etc. All of these benefits are

possibly attainable for children studying in a Bilingual Education System since the brain uses

different parts of itself while using different languages, and new connections within the brain are

formed.

Apart from mental and intellectual benefits, this system also has social benefits as well

such as better self-esteem and cross-cultural appreciation.
