RIZAL 031: FINAL EXAMINATION

(GROUP TASK)

EXPLORING THE FILIPINO IDENTITY

THROUGH THE CHARACTERS OF RIZAL’S NOVELS

DEADLINE: Thursday, December 22

TASK DETAILS:
It is said the Jose Rizal designed the characters in his novels to symbolize the BEST and the
WORST attributes that make up our identities as Filipinos. These attributes (both good and bad)
can still be observed among 21st century Filipinos. Do the activity below and make sure to follow the
instructions provided.

PART I:
1) Choose ONLY FIVE (5) characters from Rizal’s novels (Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo, or a
mix from both). The decision on which character will be included in the project is 100% YOUR
choice.

2) Identify and include an image of the characters. You may search the internet for pictures but sources
must be identified in the Bibliography.

3) Analyze the characterization of each character. Explain in detail which aspect of the Filipino
identity was Jose Rizal trying to portray through his characters. Do this for EACH of the five
characters that you have chosen.

PART II:
1) Reflect on the CURRENT PHILIPPINE SOCIETY. For EACH character that you identified in Part 1,
think of a SPECIFIC FILIPINO (an individual) who you consider to be the MODERN-DAY
representations of the characters you chose. You MUST name INDIVIDUAL people, NOT
groups or organizations.

2) Include an image of the person. Make sure to give credit to the original source by including the
source in the Bibliography.

3) For EACH individual, explain in detail why they are the ideal representations of their respective
literary counterparts.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS:
➢ Your group project should have a title page. Refer to page 3 for the sample.

➢ Use ARIAL font style, size 12.

➢ Create a Bibliography where you will list down ALL the sources that you used when
conducting research for this task. The original source(s) from where you took the images must
be included in the Bibliography as well.

➢ The Bibliography should be on a SEPARATE page, and it must be the last page of your project.
Follow the APA format when making your bibliography.

➢ DO NOT PLAGIARIZE! Aside from including a Bibliography, you MUST paraphrase the
information gathered from your research. Use in-text citations.

➢ While no specific format is given for this task, you need to make sure that you will comply with the
task’s instructions and that all necessary information is present in your output to avoid deductions
from your score.
➢ Save and upload your work in MS TEAMS as a PDF FILE.
➢ Fill-out the task documentation form and submit it together with your project.

➢ Only ONE member from the group will submit the final output AND the documentation form.
In total, I expect each group to submit TWO FILES. There should be NO BLANK SUBMISSIONS.

➢ Submit your work via “ASSIGNMENTS” in MS Teams. I will NOT accept submissions sent to me
through “chat”.

➢ Answer the Peer Evaluation form. Leaders and the member’s representative MUST submit
their evaluations SEPARATELY. A different “assignment” will be created in Teams where you will
upload your evaluation forms. Deadline is on December 23. NO PEER EVALUATION = NO
INDIVIDUAL SCORE.

➢ Deductions will apply if instructions are not followed.

CRITERIA:
Your work will be scored based on the criteria below.

Content/Relevance (30 pts.)

- the content clearly addresses what is required from the task; provides an in-depth analysis of the
symbolism/Filipino attributes the novel’s characters represent; explains in detail how the real-life
modern counterparts are similar to the characters in the novel; the points of comparison between
the two are not superficial or shallow.

Organization (20 pts.)

- ideas are expressed clearly and presented in a logical order; all the information is not crammed
in just a single paragraph, lay-out of content is organized.

Writing Mechanics & Grammar (15 pts.)

- extremely minimal or no errors when it comes to writing mechanics (grammar, spelling, & use of
punctuation, capitalization, etc.)

Compliance (20 pts.)

- instructions given for the task are followed; output is submitted on or before the deadline

Output integrity (15 pts.)

- expresses ideas in one’s own words and did not merely “copy & paste” the contents from the

is provided; bibliography follows the APA format

TOTAL SCORE: 100 pts.
