A 1000

Splendid Suns
[Khaled Hosseini]

THEME
Feminism centered storyline with captivating narration, with
a Tinch of symbolism and allusions. Lands in the category
of historical and cultural fiction. Simple vocabulary with
classic referencing to Rumi and Hafiz. Pragmatic but
unpredictable climate. An Afghani setting, traditional but
distinct characters, and poetic illustration overall made the
story exclusive. Furthermore, ended in clichéd Khalid
Hosseini style; subtle alas revealing.

SUMMARY
Protagonist depends on reader's self-depiction; can be
either Layla or Maryam. Layla represents a modern,
educated and privileged girl amidst war, fascism and
human rights crises. Whilst, Mariyam portrays an
unprivileged, love deprived, domestically abused and
average village woman.

REVIEW
Pitying afghani citizens over never-ending crisis and an
extended war era is a common trait lately. However,
reading 1000 splendid suns compounded that pity with
empathy which transformed it into honest sympathy.
Layla’s character can be a high pedestal for teenagers to
inspire. Whereas, Maryam is more about self-acceptance,
self-actualization and motherhood alas being barren.
Rashid and Jalil picture the standard Talibanic image,
however, Babi and Tariq portray a constructive Afghani men
thought process.

CRITICISM
Jalil and Tariq’s character were not very well developed
without any sound end. Layla and Tariq’s underage
intimacy can impact young readers adversely. Third quarter
of story was comparatively slow paced than others.
However, with very few loopholes story does end up
achieving its actual purpose and casts an everlasting spell
on readers.
