ABSTRACT
Video gaming has become a favorite pastime of children, adolescents, and
adults in recent times. Some engage in gaming for more than 6 hr daily,
which can subsequently lead to less time spent being physically active.
Gaming can potentially have a serious impact on the physiology and
biochemistry of gamers and can influence both short-term and long-term
health. This report aims to provide an overview of how gaming affects the
physiological and biochemical parameters in the human body.

1
PREFACE
A video game or computer game is an electronic game that involves
interaction with a user interface or input device such as a controller or
motion-sensing device to generate visual feedback, this feedback mostly
commonly is shown on a video display device and are augmented with
audio feedback delivered through speakers or headphones.

Research states that almost 40% of the population are playing video games
currently. India is spending more on mobile, PC and console games than a
year ago, according to a March 21 report by EY and FICCI the number of
gamers in India increased by 17% from 80 million in 2020 to 95 million in
2021.

2
EFFECTS OF GAMING OVER HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY

A growing body of evidence shows that video gaming can affect the brain
and cause changes in many regions of the brain mainly the sympathetic
nervous system which is one of our body’s regulatory mechanisms. One of
its jobs is to deal with stress. The nervous system is programmed with a
fight-or-flight response (also called the acute stress response) to increase
our chances of survival if we find ourselves in danger. This response is
triggered instinctively in reaction to a perceived threat to survival. When
our mind is focused on watching or playing a video game with intense
action, even though we may not actually be in real danger, our adrenal
medulla gland still springs into action because of our stressed state.

It releases hormones and a rush of adrenaline that could increase blood

pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate , turns fat into available energy,
suspends digestion and dilates the pupils.

3
EFFECTS OF LONG HOUR GAMING OVER OUR BODY

Playing video games for long hours cause many health issues such as:
Neck and back pain
Eye irritation
Obesity

Back pain and Neck pain :

Playing video game for long hours causes neck and back pain in gamers because of
their bad posture this leads to tech neck , a disorder that changes the curvature of the
spine and can cause severe muscle strain and mobility loss.

Eye irritation:
Eye strain is a common condition caused due to intense amount of exposure of eyes
to screen light while playing video game. It generally occurs when we spend too
many hours staring at the screen. Along with that we typically do not position the
screen at an ideal distance or angle, which can cause added strain. All these issues
add up and can lead to lasting effects on our vision, especially in children.

4
Obesity:
People who play video games for long hours are prone to obesity. As they are
physically inactive for long hours and lack of physical activity makes them obese.
Researchers found that the average gamer had a BMI of 28.05. The average
non-gamer had a BMI of 26.55. Anyone with a BMI over 25 is overweight.

5
PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF GAMING

There are various psychological effects of gaming

It changes behaviour and causes irritability.
It causes difficulty in sleeping.
It can lead to a peculiar interest in the real-life equivalent of the weapons used in
video games.
It makes people feel depressed.
It causes low self-esteem and leads to suicidal thoughts.

SOCIAL ISOLATION

DIFFICULTY IN SLEEPING

LOW SELF ESTEEM

6
ADVANTAGES OF GAMING
Aside from being entertaining and a fun pastime, gaming can provide a way for
people to interact with each other in a virtual community as they work together
toward completing familiar tasks. Our society suffers from an epidemic of
loneliness, and gaming can be a vehicle to connect with others.

There is mixed research that there are some cognitive benefits to gaming, such as
better control of one’s attention and improved spatial reasoning. However, it isn’t
entirely clear how much these benefits extend outside the video game sphere into the
real world. Finally, video games have medical applications, such as training people
with degenerative diseases to improve their balance, helping adolescents with
ADHD improve their thinking skills or training surgeons on how to do technically
complicated operations.

7
VIDEO GAMES GENRE

A video game genre is a specific category of games related to similar

gameplay characteristics. Video game genres are usually defined by how
the player interacts with the game.

Some video game genre:

Action
Action adventure
Adventure
Puzzle
Roleplaying
Stimulation
Sports
Racing
Sandbox
Trivia
Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO and MMOG)

8
ACTION GAMES:
Action games emphasize physical challenges that require hand-eye
coordination and motor skill to overcome. These kinds of video games are
hugely popular and have a wide range of subgenres that accommodate
different physical coordination and responses.

PUZZLE GAMES

A Puzzle is a game or that tests a person's ingenuity or knowledge. In a

puzzle, the solver is expected to put pieces together in a logical way, in
order to arrive at the correct or fun solution of the puzzle.

SPORTS VIDEO GAMES

Sports video game is a video game that simulates the practice of

sports. Most sports have been recreated with a game, including team sports,
track and field, extreme sports, and combat sports. Some games emphasize
actually playing the sport , whilst others emphasize strategy and sport
management

STRATEGY VIDEO GAMES

Strategy is a major video game genre that emphasizes thinking and planning over
direct instant action to achieve victory. A player must plan a series of actions against
one or more opponents. This greatly involves the mind to think tactically,
strategically and logistically it combines combat and planning.

EXPERIMENT

Requirements
1. Sphygmomanometer
2. Heart rate monitor
3. Thermometer
4. Pulse oximeter
5. Peoples of different age group
Experimental Procedures

1. Segregate people of different age groups according to their age and measure
their body temperature, Heart rate, Blood pressure and Oxygen level and note
the readings.
2. Now allocate a particular game genre for each individual of the same age
group and let them play their video games for a particular period.
3. Measure the body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen level
amid intense gaming and note the readings
4. Now compare the readings recorded before and while playing video game

Result :
From the above experiment, it is clearly seen that there is an increase in body
temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation in players while
playing video games. The readings are not much affected by their age but the
readings vary with the game genre with which the player played. This shows that
video games affect our body's physiological functioning

Precautions:
1. Use standard equipment
2. Place the pulse oximeter properly
3. Make sure that the straps of the sphygmomanometer are tight around the
arms of the person.

15
CONCLUSION:

Playing video games, being a passive activity impacts our total physiology.
Our studies have shown increases in oxygen consumption (VO2), blood
pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and energy cost in response to video
gameplay. People who remain physically inactive for long periods because
of gaming may also be at higher risk of obesity, sleep disorders, and other
health-related issues, according to WHO. The worldwide prevalence of
gaming appears to be obsessive-compulsive disorder and some substance-
related addictions. There is an exponential increase in the gaming industry
has led to a ruinous impact on the current generation.

Video games are not necessarily the source of health problems. It is

possible to be a healthy gamer and enjoy video games as a recreational
activity.
